PMDD And Christian Motherhood: How To Navigate Hormonal Struggles And Faith

PMDD and Christian Motherhood Cover

Motherhood is a beautiful calling—one filled with joy, challenges, and moments that stretch our hearts and our faith. But for those of us who wrestle with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), the calling can feel especially heavy. Hormonal storms can collide with the daily demands of parenting, leaving us feeling overwhelmed, irritable, and sometimes far from the version of ourselves we long to be. How do we balance the weight of PMDD with the call to nurture and guide our children? And where does faith fit into this struggle?

Understanding PMDD in the Context of Motherhood

PMDD is more than “premenstrual mood swings.” It’s a severe, chronic condition that affects mood, energy levels, and even physical well-being. For moms, this can manifest as extreme fatigue, irritability, or feelings of hopelessness—right in the midst of laundry piles, sibling squabbles, and the 4 p.m. meltdown hour.

Recognizing the weight of PMDD doesn’t make us weak or unfaithful; it gives us clarity and equips us to take action. As Christian mothers, we know that acknowledging our struggles isn’t a sign of defeat—it’s an opportunity to invite God into our journey.

Leaning on God in the Hardest Moments

PMDD can make even simple tasks—like responding with patience—feel monumental. In these moments, Scripture becomes a lifeline. Consider Matthew 11:28-30, where Jesus says:

“Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

This promise reminds us that we don’t have to bear the weight of PMDD alone. God invites us to trade our heavy burdens for His peace. Sometimes this looks like whispering a prayer when our patience is thin or opening the Bible for comfort when tears come without reason.

Practical Ways to Balance PMDD and Parenting

Faith is foundational, but there are also practical steps that can help us steward our health and our families well:

  1. Create Space for Grace: On hard days, give yourself permission to let go of perfection. Your children don’t need a perfect mom; they need a mom who is present, even if that means cuddling on the couch instead of cooking a homemade dinner.
  2. Build a Support Network: Reach out to trusted friends, family members, or your church community. Having someone who understands your struggles can provide encouragement and practical help—like watching the kids for an hour so you can rest.
  3. Communicate with Your Family: Depending on their ages, share age-appropriate insights with your children about what you’re experiencing. Teaching them about emotions and leaning on God through challenges can be a powerful lesson in faith.
  4. Prioritize Self-Care: Caring for yourself isn’t selfish; it’s wise. Whether it’s through nutrition, exercise, or a quiet moment of prayer, taking time to care for your body and soul equips you to care for your family.
  5. Seek Professional Help: I am not a doctor, nor do I pretend to be. However, research shows that PMDD requires medical attention. Don’t hesitate to consult a doctor or therapist who understands the condition and can offer guidance. Seeking help reflects wisdom and stewardship of the life God has given you.

Finding Faith in the Mess

PMDD doesn’t disappear because of our faith, but our faith transforms how we navigate it. Motherhood, with all its chaos and beauty, becomes an opportunity to model dependence on God. When we fall short, we show our children the power of God’s grace. When we persevere, we testify to His strength working in us.

One of the most comforting truths in Scripture is found in 2 Corinthians 12:9:

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

In our weakest moments, God’s power shines the brightest. Let’s cling to this promise as we navigate the complexities of PMDD and Christian motherhood.

Encouragement for the Journey

If you’re a mom battling PMDD, know this: you are not alone. God sees you, He hears you, and He walks with you through every hormonal wave and parenting challenge. You are doing holy work—even on the days it feels messy and imperfect.

Take heart, mama. God’s grace is enough for you. And His love will sustain you, one day at a time.

A note from Nicole about PMDD

A Note From Nicole

Finally figuring out what PMDD was and how it was affecting my daily life and motherhood was a monumental discovery. But it shouldn’t have been. Too many mothers are experiencing these struggles with little to no education on what PMDD actually is.

My hope and prayer is that by sharing my stories of trials and success, I can help other women and mothers not feel so isolated and ashamed of their inability to properly manage these hormonal surges.

🍎 THIRD GRADE HERE I COME! 👩🏼‍🏫 I st 🍎 THIRD GRADE HERE I COME! 👩🏼‍🏫
I still can’t believe I’m typing this…
This fall, I’ll be stepping into the classroom as a third grade teacher at Christian Liberty Academy!

Yes, I’m excited to teach. But what I’m really excited about is sharing what God has done to bring me here—because this story started over 10 years ago.

In 2013, I walked into CLA for a memorial honoring Mike’s brother. I was a brand-new believer, and something about the place just wrecked me in the best way.
I left in tears, whispering, “I want to teach here.”

But I was a hairstylist with no plans for school. That dream felt wild and impossible.

Two years later, I applied to Moody Bible Institute. Not only was I accepted, but they took all my beauty school credits. A miracle.

Over the years, God kept weaving CLA into our lives—through friends, connections, and redemption stories I could’ve never planned.

When we enrolled Andy in kindergarten there, that same homecoming feeling returned. But with littles at home, we homeschooled for a few years.

Then last fall, God stirred our hearts again. I submitted my resume in faith… not knowing what job (if any) was available.

Fast forward: CLA called.
I thought it was for Bible class.
Instead… they offered me third grade.

It was more than I could’ve ever dreamed.
The moment I stepped into the classroom, I felt it deep in my bones—this is where I’m meant to be.

Only God could take a rebel-hearted hairstylist with nothing but questions…
and turn her into a teacher with a calling.

From salon chairs to classroom desks—He did it.
He planted me right where my heart first whispered, “I want to be here.”

All glory to the One who does immeasurably more than we could ask or imagine.

Motherhood is such a contradiction. It will bring Motherhood is such a contradiction.

It will bring you to your knees in worship and in weariness.

It’s the greatest gift—and the greatest sacrifice.

A holy calling that asks for your whole heart, your whole self, and somehow, gives you even more in return.

Motherhood is late nights and early mornings.

It’s sticky kisses, tearful prayers, and deep, unspoken joys.

It’s the ache of pouring out—and the awe of being loved so fiercely by little hearts who see you as home.

To be a mama is to live in the tension:
of holding on and letting go, of losing yourself and somehow finding more of who God created you to be.

And today, while we honor the beauty and blessing of motherhood, we also hold space for the brokenhearted.

For the women who long for a child.
For those grieving a mama they can’t call today.
For those with strained relationships, losses, or longings.

You are seen. You are loved. You are not forgotten.

Happy Mother’s Day—to the weary, the wonder-filled, and the waiting.

May you feel the love of a God who sees it all and calls it holy.

Today was so bittersweet 😩 Last April I was as Today was so bittersweet 😩

Last April I was asked if I wanted to teach in our homeschool group at Bible study.

My instant answer was a hard no; but I’d pray about it.

I’m so thankful for the Lords discernment, so thankful that His Word is alive and active. I prayed and he answered me.

I was teaching homeschool.

I don’t ever feel qualified to be sharing Gods word. And if you were one of those who rebelled with me in my youth then it shouldn’t be hard to understand why.

And yet, God equipped me every step of the way, igniting a passion and joy within me, allowing me a creative outlet that shined a light on Him, and all the while continuing to grow in grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ.

Tomorrow, I’m doing something I’ve only dreamt of doing for over ten years now; I’m interviewing at Christian Liberty Academy.

My hearts desire has been to teach Bible there since I first stepped foot in the art wing back in 2013.

I can still remember sitting in Mrs. Hessler’s room, hearing stories about Mike’s brother, their class, the community they had. I never felt so at home amongst strangers.

This opportunity is the only thing that can pull me away from community Bible study.

And so. Today, my amazing cbs family not only gifted me with the most beautiful goodbye flowers, but sent me off covered in prayer!

As I anticipate the interview tomorrow, I am so beyond thankful for this community that has poured into me these last seven years!

And for the incomprehensible reminder that God is with is always.

No matter what happens. It’s all for His glory ✌🏼!
“Why do you seek the living among the dead?” ( “Why do you seek the living among the dead?” (Luke 24:5)

On that quiet morning, everything changed. The tomb was empty, hope was alive, and death was defeated.
Today we don’t just remember a moment in history—we celebrate a living Savior who still meets us in our brokenness, walks with us in our waiting, and calls us into resurrection life.

Let your heart rise with the dawn. The stone has been rolled away.
Jesus is alive, and because of that—so is hope.

Happy Resurrection Sunday, friends!

One of our favorite Easter weekend traditions is m One of our favorite Easter weekend traditions is making this Easter Story Snack Mix!

It’s simple, fun, and such a sweet way to focus on why we’re really celebrating. We lay out all the ingredients, and as we go through each one, we read a snippet of Scripture that points us back to the Easter story.

The kids and I both love it—it’s a meaningful (and yummy) way to spark conversation!

I turned the ingredient list and Scripture guide into a printable for my email subscribers. Every day of this Holy Week series, I’ve been sharing meaningful resources to help the week come alive (pun intended)!

Good Friday isn’t comfortable —and it shouldn’t be. But we don’t sit in sorrow
without hope. We sit in the tension of mourning and marveling.

I feel like I’m extra sensitive this year to the weight of this day while also standing in an awe I havnt experienced in years.

Honestly, probably not since I first believed.

I’ve spent the last few weeks, and especially the last six days, prepping and preparing an exclusive Holy Week study series for my email subscribers.

I almost didn’t do it because I don’t have a grand scale of subscribers and I often believe the quantity is the requirement to create content.

Wrestling with and in the waiting this year caused me to really reflect on the question: where does my joy come from?

It genuinely comes from the Lord; being consumed by His Word, sharing Truth, communing in creativity.

I’ve really fallen in love with the more intimate and authentic atmosphere of emails. It sounds strange I know. But the social pressure isn’t there and I feel so much more acclimated to share more vulnerably .

As with most my emails, the Holy Week series started as little notes sporadically written across my phone app. Usually typed within the darkness of my bedroom late at night or in the first rays of sunshine in the all too early morning. There is no in between here.

Those little notes evolved into such a sweet symphony of study. I can’t express the gratitude I have for the almost dozen women walking alongside me this Holy Week. But truly I tell you, I would do this again even if no one joined.

Digging deep into the depths of this week is beyond life giving - it’s giving eternity! It’s the tiniest taste of a greater satisfaction. It’s sitting in the tension of the mourning and marveling.

The weight of today is so devastating. But it’s also where our redemption shines. Love for me and you is what held our savior to that tree. Living this life for Him, in full surrender, is only possible because of that cross.

Thank you Jesus.

5 Practical Ways to Prepare Your Heart For Holy Week

Sister, brace yourself because Holy Week is just around the corner!

And let’s be real, my heart is starting to race like a caffeinated rabbit. The last thing I want is to enter this sacred time on autopilot, doing what’s expected of me without truly engaging with the beauty of it all.

It’s not difficult in this current culture and these achingly tumultuous times to get distracted by all the noise of the world. (And, lets be honest – the volume of this moment in history is turned way up!)

So, I’ve been pondering, praying, and uncovering ways to help me and my family prepare our heart’s and uniquely celebrate the beautiful beginning to glory that is Holy Week, versus just going through the motions. Today I am here to spill the jelly beans on 5 ways you too, can prepare your hearts for Holy Week.

So grab a cup of tea and get ready for 5 suggestions that will help you to discover ways to slow down and truly anticipate, reflect, and embrace the eternal promise of Easter.

  1. Daily Devotions

As Holy Week approaches, it’s important to not only prepare our homes and calendars, but also our hearts. One practical way to do this is through daily devotions.

Whether you use devotion cards, a book, or simply open your Bible, carving out time each day to focus on God’s word will help prepare your heart for the significance of Holy Week.

And if you have little ones at home, try engaging their busy hands as you read and discuss together. Not only will they learn and grow in their faith, but it’s an opportunity for you to model the importance of spiritual discipline and devotion.

Here are some of our faves and where to get them!

(In case you’re wondering or maybe just for my own anxiety to stay authentic – these are NOT affiliate links.)

  • 31 Days of Prayer Cards
Holy Week prayer cards

Why I love this: Simple, rich, and efficient – because we all know that its hard to hold little ones attention.  The cards are a perfect hand held size, bright in color, bold illustrations.

I whole punched in a corner of each card and attached them to a binder ring so that they hang in our kitchen for an easy reminder to go over during or after breakfast.

Website Description: “Designed to be used as a tool to encourage prayer throughout the month, each card highlights a different topic to pray for. Choose one that corresponds with the day of the month and pray for that request. Each card includes Scripture and three prompts to guide your prayer. These are perfect for family devotions, mornings over breakfast, or even the carpool line.

Cards include prompts to pray for family, friends, neighbors, wisdom, contentment, unbelievers, missionaries, and more.”

  • Beginners Bible 365 Days of Devotions for Kids
Holy Week Devotions with the Beginner Bibles 365 Devotions for Kids

Why I love it: Again, simple and efficient , but still packed with theological grit is a huge deal for this mama of a 6, 4, and 2 year old! We have a much older version that gives a brief devotion, bible story, and memory verse or activity also.

Website Description:  This was the closest I could find to what we use, but it still looks great and is now in my lists on amazon. “Featuring original content based on the bestselling The Beginner’s Bible—a favorite with young children and their parents since its release in 1989—The Beginner’s Bible 365 Devotions for Kids is filled with exciting, full-color artwork and easy-to-read text. Perfect for children 6 and under, each of the 365 devotions also has a theme clearly connecting the Scripture to the story to the art.

  • Bible

And please hear this – you don’t need beautiful cards or a special book just for devotions when you’ve got the real deal – the good old-fashioned physical Bible!

Even my young kiddos love flipping through their own copies. Sure, they may only focus on one verse at a time, just peruse the images in their Storybook Bible, or even the two year old will journal (read: draw) but that doesn’t stop them from getting curious about the bigger picture. Sometimes we keep it simple, musing on a single scripture as we go about our day.

Other times, we get scholarly and dive deep into historical context (this Bible majors favorite). No matter the approach, our crew knows the value of spending time with the written Word – page by tangible page.

  1. Worship

Another practical way to prepare our hearts for Holy Week is to engage in worship. Whether it’s through singing, prayer, or praise, worship allows us to focus on God’s majesty and goodness. In doing so, we become more receptive to the Holy Spirit’s leading and can enter into a deeper understanding of what Holy Week represents.

There is nothing quite like hearing my kids belting out worship music with me.  Tasha Layton, Anne Wilson, and Meredith Andrews are a few of our faves (with some Thrice mixed in just for good measure (#millenialmusicsnob)! We are in our car pretty much daily and love listening to audiobooks throughout our journey, but the tunes have been for sure tuning our hearts more towards the Lord.

Here is my current playlist on repeat. Get on Spotify and create your own or save this one!

  1. Conversations

I cannot be the only one who has toddlers and little kids who LOVE to talk. I also can’t be the only one who gets short and slightly annoyed by the fifth time they call your name in unabridged excitement to ask you the same thing they did five minutes ago.

So, lately, I have been trying to really embrace these moments and give them my full attention.  Maybe its because I am trying to be more intentional about my response and really choosing to listen to them but we have had some amazing conversations lately and I want to keep fostering them as much as possible.

When you really stop to think about it, almost every question, suggestion, statement or shout, can be traced back to a way to reference the Bible because every story is relevant in some way, to some one.

Don’t let those gospel conversations scare you off – we’ve got just the thing to make it easy peasy. I am linking these beautiful Gospel Cards that will have you spreading good vibes (and good news) in no time. And while you’re at it, do yourself a favor and check out the Daily Grace Co. – talk about eye candy!

  1. Creating or Engaging in a Tradition or Activity

Holidays are the perfect chance to create moments that will become family stories to be told for years to come. And if you ask my kids, Easter takes the cake as the ultimate tradition. As soon as my first little one was born, I became the mastermind behind an epic egg hunt.

Picture me late at night, under the cover of darkness, sneakily hiding treats and treasures all over the house. And no, these weren’t your run-of-the-mill eggs – some had candy, some had coins, and some had nothing at all (cruel, I know). It was like my own Resurrection Eggs, but with a personal touch.

But really, creating traditions doesn’t have to be just about the egg hunt. The sky is the limit when it comes to finding ways to celebrate together as a family. Maybe it’s taking a nature walk, reenacting the Last Supper, or attending services as a unit. Regardless of what you choose, it’s those special moments spent together that truly make the holidays unforgettable.

Our family loves arts & crafts so this year I created Holy Week Coloring Pages – perfect for the whole family to get stuck in with colouring pencils and a side of scripture. You’ll be egg-static to know that with each page, you’ll deepen your understanding of each day’s significant meaning.

And guess what? You can get your hands on these pages for FREE! Yup, you heard that right. Click Here to download your FREE copy now!

If that’s not enough, hop over to my Etsy shop for an egg-sclusive Resurrection Eggs Coloring Book – complete with cracking designs.

  1. Praying Together

The most practical and powerful way we can prepare our hearts for Holy Week is by praying together.  Whether as a family at home, communally in corporate worship, or with friends over Easter celebrations – prayer is our God given communication line that connects us directly to our Savior.

Open the Bible and let the living and active word speak to you.  And then open up your heart and give all your cares, anxieties, praises, and prayers to the one who carries the world.

My prayers lately have been full of a lot of surrender.  Attempting to quiet my anxious heart amidst the chaos and allow the Lord to speak what is true, to let go of things I cannot control and make room for the Lord to work His will within my life.

Here is my prayer for you;

Lord, I pray for my sisters reading this right now.  I pray God that you would saturate their mind with things of Heaven, that as we approach this incredible week, we wouldn’t be weighed down by the weight of the world, but instead, Father, that we would take heart, believing and accepting that you have overcome the world.  God may our hearts ache the way yours did in the garden as you prepared to give up your life to save ours.  May we rejoice at the reconciliation that we gained with your resurrection.  And God may we celebrate the eternal glory we will experience if we have put our faith in you!  Bless this week Lord, and may the residual joy radiate throughout the rest of the year.  In Jesus’ name we pray, AMEN!

Now that we have explored the five practical ways to prepare our hearts for Holy Week, I hope you have been inspired and equipped with the tools needed to become more spiritually equipped this upcoming Holy Week.

Take a moment, take a breath, and journey with us throughout the year by gaining access to weekly encouragement in your inbox!

While this Easter season may look drastically different than in years past, God has promised He will never leave us nor forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6). Remember, by keeping your focus on Jesus instead of your current circumstances, you’ll be able to experience the beauty of the season and its transition from darkness to light just like the first Easter morning.

May you continue to be humble before God’s mighty power and His everlasting grace!

The Truth About Motherhood and the Mistaken Identity

motherhood

Becoming a Mom

Before my first son was born in 2016, I worked a full time job, a part time job, went to school online full time and still managed to date my husband, serve in church, work out every day, and have a social life.

My schedule may have looked crazy to some people – sometimes it definitely felt overwhelming – but it was MY crazy.  And I loved it.  Crazy worked for me. It was a part of my identity.

When we found out we were expecting a baby, I had the utmost confidence in becoming a mom.  After all, I was already a self proclaimed master multi-tasker.  How hard could it be?

So, that was it.  I would stay home and Mike would be the provider. We knew it would require some faith financially, but we also knew God would provide.  And, He did.

When Andy was three months old, Mike got his official acceptance into Local 73 Sheet Metal Workers.  He was a union man!

A Little background

To put this into context, my family owned their own construction company when I was little.  I spent almost my entire youth in construction yards, at Truck shows, and learning how to run a crane.

When Bongi Construction closed in the 90’s, my dad was still a union man, an operator for over 20 years for Local 150.  I was darn proud that my husband also became a union man; because I knew, first hand, how well we were taken care of, and I knew that Mike would now be able to offer our family the same support.

Almost seven years, lots of schooling, and an official Local 73 Journeyman card later, Mike is more than happy to be where he is.

I wish I could say the same.

Mistaken

I learned quite quickly that being a Stay at Home Mom was not as elementary as I had assumed.  It was the total opposite.

Out of all the jobs I had, motherhood was, by far, the hardest.

Never in my life was I so exhausted, confused, anxious, doubtful and drained.  But I also never experienced the joy or love I felt when I was cradling Andy in my arms, watching him explore every new scene and sensation, or hearing him coo and giggle.

It seemed a fair trade, so I did my best to embrace this new normal and tell myself how lucky I was to have this opportunity to stay home, and that I was wrong – almost ashamedly so – to be unhappy.

A new opportunity

Andy was five months old when I was invited to an online party for Usborne Books & More.  An avid reader myself, I had stocked our house with books for my baby boy the moment the test read positive.

The consultant had asked if I wanted to join, and truthfully, I did NOT.  I had my own salon at 23 and closing those doors was the hardest thing I ever had to do.  I didn’t know if I could handle failing at this.

But I also had over $100 worth of books in my cart that Mike was not going to approve of.  Financially, it made more sense to join for $50, and get 10 books plus the opportunity to earn some extra cash.

That was the best decision I almost never made.  My book business boomed – and quickly.  I had a team of over 20 girls, promoted after a month, earned hundreds of extra dollars, and almost $1000 in free books.

This was what I needed; this was something I could work at without actually being at work, goals I could strive for and accomplish and see.

Oops! I did it again.

Two years into my little book business and I  suddenly felt that same loss and confusion I had when Andy was an infant.  It shouldn’t have taken as long as it admittedly did for me to realize that these same feelings were arising after the birth of my daughter. I realized that it wasn’t just the hormones, it was full blown postpartum depression.

Postpartum hits every woman differently.

For me, it causes a case of mistaken identity.  I doubt who I am and what I’m doing.  My worth becomes blurry and entangled in the lies of the world.

By social media standards, as a SAHM I should be able to have an impeccable home, Pinterest worthy meals, hair and makeup selfie ready at all times (ok, that one isn’t very hard for me – I learned how to get ready in under 5 minutes in beauty school), and kids that are beautifully chaotic.

Beautiful disaster

Instead, I was spending my days catering to my customers instead of my kids, popping frozen meals in the oven, and yelling at my beautiful babies for needing me.  The business that brought me joy was now a burden.  My health was fleeting, my mental stability was wavering, and I refused to ask for help.

Rather than seek God and trust that I was good enough as a mom, I continued to seek other avenues to fill the gap that was growing larger.  I developed a desire to help others who want a more natural approach to health and wellness, I went back to my beauty roots and started educating and empowering women on makeup and skincare, and while I found success and joy in both these places, my soul somehow still felt lost.

It was like I was living someone else’s life.

Changing seasons

Last winter, my family and I anticipated the arrival of baby 3.  I thought I was rock steady mentally; I was in tune with my body and my mind, I was thriving spiritually as I was daily in the Word, and, come on – I had done this twice already!  Baby 3, I was sure, would be a postpartum breeze.

Wrong.

Maybe it was just the season we were in – covid, quarantine, loss of loved ones, change – but this little nugget who decided to join us a few weeks early on Christmas Eve, completely knocked me on my postpartum behind.

And once again, I felt so disconnected from myself.

This time, I knew I needed help.  I joined the BetterHelp app and was synced to an amazing therapist who aided me in dealing with past trauma I never shared with anyone else before.

Better Help

With my therapist’s encouragement, I took a step back from my businesses, and I started writing more consistently. In addition to prompting me to write more, she also suggested I read this book, Uninvited by Lysa Terkeurst.

I cannot recommend this book enough – I think every single woman needs to read it. This woman’s words hit my heart in a way that only scripture had before.  Naturally, I googled her and stumbled upon a website called Compel Training.  The homepage literally read “Your writer’s soul has found its place.”

I think I stopped breathing.  It felt like the Holy Spirit whispered those words into the depths of who I was created to be.

I joined when they opened registration and started writing during nap time, after bedtime, in the morning at 4 AM before anyone was awake, literally any chance I had.  With every push of the keyboard, I felt like I was finding myself again.

Joy

I relived that same sense of joy I did when I was bustling my butt around like a crazy person everyday before I became a mom.  I experienced that same sense of joy from submitting a book proposal that I did when I became a Red Jacket.

And mostly, I finally began to feel like I was right where God wanted me all along, sharing His truth and glory and story of redemption.

Being a mom, and a wife, and a daughter of Christ is proving to be the best full time job I could have ever imagined – once I learned to let it be enough (something I am still learning), and let it be my full time ministry.

But God has also equipped us with gifts of the Spirit, and it’s only when our will is aligned with his that we can be fully immersed in true joy.  Compel has given that to me; a community of believers who seek to share the love of Christ by sharing our unique and predestined stories.

New mercies come in the morning

I never saw myself where I am; sitting at my kitchen table, kids napping, writing next to the big picture window, contemplating motherhood and the mistaken identity so many moms experience.

It’s not easy to admit defeat, or let go of an image we created for ourselves.  I still see my fellow book bosses and wonder if I made the right choice letting go. I now share on the blog about our naturally well journey, motherhood, and my faith.

I no longer feel like I’m walking in someone else’s shoes, but instead, feel like I am running my own race, staying contentedly in my own lane.

So, to all my fellow moms who may feel lost or like they’re living a mistaken identity themselves; know that you are loved beyond all measure.  Know that God is faithful, His word is true, and know that His grace is sufficient for you.  There is no shame in seeking counseling, asking for help, or trying to find a community besides the one consisting of little humans you birthed.

Make no mistake, Mama, our ultimate identity is anchored in the Hope of Christ.  When you start to feel lost, I encourage you to remember that there is a Shepherd calling you by name.

All we need to do is slow down and listen.

I hope this was encouraging for you! I would love for you to be apart of my email community! You can join HERE for weekly encouragement and more!

Motherhood Unplugged: How to find Encouragement in the Messy Moments

motherhood cover

If I had to choose one quote that perfectly summed motherhood, it would be this one; “the days are long, but the years are short.”

Motherhood is beautiful and rewarding, but it is also the hardest work we will ever do. It’s not always Instagram-worthy moments. Sometimes it’s sleepless nights, meltdowns, and sticky fingers (that touch EVERYTHING).

These less-than-picture-perfect moments of motherhood can leave us feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, and exhausted – especially when you add in personal struggles like PMDD or ADHD.

But, the truth is, it’s in these messy moments that we grow, learn, and find joy.

In this blog post, we’re going to talk about the real and raw mental moments in motherhood, and I’ll offer authentic biblical encouragement for how we can deal with these messy moments.

So, grab that cold cup of coffee, mama, and let’s get started!

You Are Not Alone in Motherhood

motherhood Isaiah 41:10

One of the most important things to remember is that you are not alone.

Every mother has these moments. No one has it all together. So, if you’re struggling with a messy moment, it’s okay. Take a deep breath. Heck, there have been times I’ve needed to take a ride or a walk.

While we don’t want to get into the trap of mediocre motherhood and complain away our burdens to another, the truth is, we were made for community. It is the sweetest gift to have someone to talk to and process through with; a sister or SIL, best friend, mom, aunt or grandma.

Having a physical support, someone to communicate back to you is incredible.  However, even if you don’t have that, you do still always have someone with you. And sister, He is available 24/7, 365.

One of the most comforting aspects of the Christian faith is that we are not expected to face life’s trials alone. God so explicitly calls us to Himself throughout His Word, encouraging us that we are not alone.

In Isaiah 41:10, the Lord promises, "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

This verse is a powerful reminder that even in the midst of motherhood’s messy moments, we are sustained by divine strength and love. Trust in God’s promise, lean into your faith, and find comfort in knowing He is with you.

Embrace the Messy Moments of Motherhood

2 corinthians 12:9 motherhood

Instead of avoiding or hiding from these messy, mental moments, embrace them.

Embracing the messy moments can help you find joy in the chaos of motherhood. The moments that seem insignificant, like a sticky kitchen table or a pile of laundry, are where memories are made and bonds are formed.

Don’t get me wrong, embracing the messy times requires not just patience but a sense of grace, both with our children and ourselves.

As mothers, we often set high standards and then feel daunted when we can’t meet them. The laundry pile, dishes in the sink, floor that needs to be washed, hockey practice that we need to be at, and all while we are prioritizing self care and our marriage.

Just me?

Sister, hear this; it’s important to remember that we are human, imperfect, and in need of grace.

The Bible encourages us to turn to God during these times. In 2 Corinthians 12:9, it is written, “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.”

This verse encourages us to acknowledge our weaknesses and find strength in God’s grace. Rather than striving for perfection, let’s choose to embrace the chaos and rest in God’s grace, allowing it to guide us through the messiness of motherhood.

Prioritize Self Care

1 corinthians 6:19-20 motherhood

I’m sure we have all heard that you can’t pour from an empty cup. As moms, we tend to put ourselves last, but this isn’t healthy or sustainable.

And we sure can’t pour into our marriage, children, friendships, commitments, or ministries if our own cup is empty.

Prioritizing self-care can go a long way in helping us navigate the messy moments of motherhood.

Self-care doesn’t have to look Pinterest worthy. You don’t need a bubble bath with candles lit and mood music playing.

Self-care for me personally looks like good habits; reading my Bible, wash my face in the AM and PM, take my vitamins, move my body (whether walking or on the bike), eating mostly whole foods (the food, not the store), and taking time to write or read.

What I do to care for myself and fill my own cup may not look like what you do or need, and that’s ok. Take some time to really figure out what it is that you need to do – non negotiable – to help your mind and body clear the clutter and chaos so when the messy moments hit, you aren’t scraping for a sip of water, but instead, have a cup overflowing.

The Bible is abundant with verses that encourage this kind of self-care, reminding us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) and we are called to take care of them.

Furthermore, Jesus Himself set an example by taking time to rest and pray alone, away from the crowds (Mark 1:35). This teaches us that it is not only acceptable, but necessary, to take time for ourselves to rejuvenate and reconnect with God.

Prioritizing self-care is not a sign of selfishness, but a mark of stewardship, as we are entrusted by God with the care of our bodies and minds.

The Power of Prayer

Psalm 145:18 motherhood

Prayer is a powerful tool that can help us deal with the messy moments of motherhood. Talk to God about your struggles, ask Him for wisdom and guidance, and trust that He is with you in every moment.

When we pray, we invite God into our messiness, and He is faithful to give us the strength and resources we need to face it.

There are many models of prayer in the Bible that can encourage us in our own prayer lives.

One such example is Hannah, who faced the struggles and heartache of barrenness. She poured out her heart to God in raw, honest prayer, and God answered her in His time (1 Samuel 1:10-20).

Another example is Mary, the mother of Jesus, who faced unimaginable circumstances. Yet, she responded with a prayer of praise and surrender to God’s plan (Luke 1:46-55).

These examples remind us to bring our struggles to God, trusting in His timing and His plan. Through prayer, we are not only provided with immediate comfort and peace, but also an intimate connection with God who is always eager to listen.

The Bible reassures us that, “The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.” (Psalm 145:18). So, in the midst of the messiness of motherhood, let’s be encouraged to continually seek God in prayer, knowing that He hears us and is near to us.

Know Your Identity in Christ – Know Your Identity in Motherhood

motherhood 2 corinthians 5:17

Finally, it’s important to remember who you are in Christ.

As a child of God, you are loved, valued, and cherished, even in the messiest moments. When we know our identity in Christ, we can face the challenges of motherhood with confidence and grace. We can trust that our worth is not defined by our performance as a mother, but by God’s unchanging love for us.

2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

As a mother in Christ, you are not defined by past failures, current struggles, or future anxieties. Instead, you are a new creation, filled with the love and power of God. This identity transcends the daily grind of motherhood, offering a sense of peace and purpose.

By internalizing this truth, you can navigate the complexities of motherhood anchored in the living Hope of God’s eternal love and acceptance.

It’s also important to draw strength from Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” This is a constant reminder that, in Christ, you have the strength for every challenge motherhood presents.

Let these truths settle into your heart, offering reassurance and comfort during your motherhood journey.

Conclusion

Motherhood is messy, but it’s also beautiful and rewarding.

If you’re struggling with the messy moments of motherhood, know that you’re not alone. Embrace the messiness, prioritize self-care, pray, and remember your identity in Christ.

These messy moments can be an opportunity for growth, learning, and finding joy. So, take a deep breath, and know that you’ve got this!

Teaching Perseverance: How To Empower Our Kids To Overcome Challenges

teaching perseverance

Our family has a new motto. Ok, ok I have a new motto; hard has the potential to produce perseverance.

A couple weeks ago we entered the ice arena for my son’s weekly hockey clinic.

Maybe it was my brain exhausted from the holidays (it was 2 days post christmas), or maybe my brain remembered incorrectly so I would be in this exact place, at this exact time.

Whichever the reason, we were there – my son all geared up and ready to roll – but there was no clinic.

My son was heartbroken. He LOVES hockey, and I’m so thankful he has an outlet to experience joy and community and determination. However, the disappointment he displayed was ripping my mama heart into pieces.

As we sullenly walked back out into the abnormally mild winter, we ran into one of his coaches.

I said hi and, thanks to my catastrophic anxiety, confirmed with her there was no practice.

Im going to pause here for a moment.

Why?

Because everything following this moment happened so fast, I just need to preface the situation with this acknowledgement so that you can fully experience what I am attempting to help you envision.

Let me say this boldly so you understand the full effect of these 30 seconds and the remaining hour that ensued – I CANNOT SKATE.

Not like, “I can’t skate – well.”

No.

Like, I have never stood without holding onto the railing type of can’t skate.

Every red flag warning and internal alarm was blaring in my brain to say NO THANKS!

Ok, let’s resume.

His coach assured me that there was no clinic in Lou of holiday breaks. BUT, she said that they WERE having a clinic for MOMS to skate.

I told his coach I can’t skate and she insisted that this was for moms who can’t skate (bless her heart for being so kind and encouraging)!

Here is why this matters for todays topic – I looked over at Andy and he was watching me with such intent and inquisitiveness that I knew, without a doubt, and with all anxiety, I had to do this.

This here was more than just a moms skate night. This was a core memory, a lesson in perseverance and overcoming doubt and mental disabilities.

perseverance hockey moms

As I looked into my first borns bright and curious hazel eyes, I said – ok, let’s do it.

Andy let out a joyful shriek at the idea of mom skating (He is well aware I am no better than a gazelle on ice), and smiled larget than I think I have ever seen him smile (that’s saying a lot).

I am beyond elated to report that I did not fall once! I actually skated without holding the boards (although I held a stick), and I even pushed through hockey drills!

When told I didn’t have to complete the drills, I not-so-confidently assured the coach that I would complete the tasks, because that is what I would want Andy to do.

Why torture myself and the other lovely moms?

My son was watching. I do not tolerate him half hearting drills on the ice, so, I couldn’t either. But, honestly, I wanted to. I wanted to run off the second I was on. It was hard. But hard is not the same as bad.

New moms, new experience, new equipment – I hope I hid it well but I was in a full blown panic attack that entire hour.

I could have gotten off, but I persevered.

perseverance

The other mothers were incredible and kind. They encouraged me, cheered for me, and geared me up with what I didn’t have (one mom even giving me her husbands hockey gloves).

And my son watched it all.

Yes, I could talk to him about perseverance, I could read him scripture. We could discuss and ponder and play out scenarios. I don’t know about you, but I always learn better when I witness the lesson in real life.

While that was probably the longest intro ever, I hope you will stay with me for a couple more minutes as we dive into a few other ways we moms can live out the power of perseverance to our kids.

Perseverance through Doubt

perseverance exodus scripture

Motherhood is a journey filled with many unexpected twists and turns. There are moments when we question our abilities, doubt our decisions, and wonder if we’re doing enough for our children. Heck, some of these might be within the same hour.

I’ve been there, and if you’re reading this, chances are, you’ve been there too. But remember, even in the Bible, many of God’s faithful servants experienced doubt.

Take Moses, for instance. He doubted his ability to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, but God reassured him and used him mightily (Exodus 4:10-12).

Similarly, God is with us in our moments of doubt, reassuring us that He has equipped us for this beautiful journey of motherhood.

So next time doubt creeps in, take a deep breath, say a prayer, and remind yourself that you are enough because the One who called you to be a mother is with you.

Perseverance through Disappointment

perseverance romans scripture

Disappointment is an inevitable part of life, and motherhood is no exception.

Maybe it’s the disappointment of a missed milestone, a parenting strategy that didn’t work, or simply the frustration when things don’t go as planned.

We’ve all had those days when the laundry pile seems never-ending, the kids are bickering, and the coffee pot is empty.

But here’s a nugget of wisdom from Scripture to hold onto: Romans 5:3-4 tells us that we can rejoice in our sufferings because suffering produces endurance, character, and hope.

These trying times are not in vain; they are shaping us into more resilient, compassionate, and patient mothers.

Remember the time when your toddler spilled their juice for the third time in a day? It was frustrating, yes, but it also taught you patience and the power of a calm response.

So next time disappointment comes knocking, embrace it as an opportunity to grow and model resilience for your children.

Perseverance through the Day

perseverance galatians scripture
*You can find these images and more in the FREEBIES section!

Let’s be honest, some days are just tough. From dawn to dusk, it feels like a marathon of meal prep, diaper changes, tantrums, homework help, and bedtime battles.

It’s in these moments, when we’re knee-deep in the trenches of motherhood, that perseverance becomes our lifeline.

The Bible offers us encouragement in Galatians 6:9, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

Each act of service, each moment of sacrifice for our children is sowing seeds of love and faith that will one day bear fruit.

So, when your day feels like a whirlwind of chaos, remember to pause, breathe, and persevere. Your daily efforts, no matter how small they seem, are making a world of difference in your child’s life.

Final Thoughts on Perseverance

You see, sisters, sometimes the most profound lessons we can teach our children come from the every day moments; the times when we’re pushed out of our comfort zones and forced to confront our fears, doubts, and insecurities happen all the time.

And in doing so, we model perseverance for our little ones.

In the face of disappointment, we have a choice. We can let it define us, or we can choose to rise above it, to lean on our faith, and to persevere.

That’s what I did on that ice rink. I chose to push past my fear, to embrace the challenge, and to show my son that even his mom can skate (or at least, try to).

So, as we wrap up this Motherhood Monday post, I want you to remember one thing: You are not alone in this journey of motherhood. Each struggle, each doubt, and each moment of perseverance is a shared experience. We are all in this together, learning, growing, and leaning on faith to guide us through.

7 Inspiring Books That Will Change Your Life

“You Can Never Get A Cup of Tea Large Enough or A Book Long Enough to Suit Me.” -C.S. Lewis

Welcome to Friday Favorites. These posts are designed as a way for me to share what I love with you! And something I love most are books.

Ever since I was a kid, reading has been the ultimate escape + adventure. My passion for books and writing began far before I can recall (so I’m told). I was an accelerated reader in elementary school and a big literary nerd in high school. As an adult, my home built library is my greatest gift.

Reading and writing are my passion, my joy, my hearts beat. That’s because there is something almost magical that happens when you dive into a book – whether fiction, fantasy, faith based, or non-fiction – isn’t there?

My favorite books are the ones where I feel like I’m talking to my best friend over coffee or watching a movie play out in my mind. Books are some of the most pure ways to communicate authentically. And the real good ones inspire, encourage, and change something inside you, well after the cover closes.

But, you’re not here to listen to my bibliophilia. If you’re reading this, that means you, too, have a love of reading and are intrigued to see if my list matches yours or if you’ll find your next favorite in this list.

I am so excited to share the titles that profoundly inspired me in 2023 (and in no particular order).

Ready to embark on a literary journey that could change your life? Let’s get started!

1. Fix Your Eyes: How Our Study of God Shapes Our Worship of Him by Amy Gannet

Fix your eyes book theology books

Goodreads Book Description

“We live in a polarized time. Christians are quick to conceive of themselves either as theologically-minded or worship-minded; either thinking Christians or feeling Christians. The results are damaging: theology without worship is muted, stifled, and cold, and worship without theology is ungrounded, unrooted, and uninformed.

This is not the way it was meant to be.

Theology (our study and knowledge of God) should always lead to doxology (our worship of Him). Worship should always be rooted in theology. When we study the nature and character of God as revealed in his Word, we are invited to respond in the affectionate, obedient discipleship of worship. How can we keep our theology from being mere head knowledge? How do we give our worship roots that will last? By fixing our eyes on God Himself—the object of our study and the object of our worship.

Fix Your Eyes is an invitation to understand core doctrines of the Christian faith and apply them in our daily worship of God. It walks believers through key theological concepts and shows how each can be lived out in daily life.”

Why I Loved This Book

Holy moly this book is power packed with sound doctrine and relatable experiences that will shape and resonate with you no matter where you are in your walk with Jesus.

As an alumni of Moody Bible Institute, this Bible Studies major is no foe to thorough exegesis and that is just what Amy illustrates and accentuates throughout this book. More Jesus, less us, especially when it comes to our study, knowledge and worship of God.

  • If you want to grow in grace and knowledge of who Jesus is, then this book is for you.
  • If you want to reignite your worship and love for God, then this book is for you.
  • If you have no idea what theology is or why it matters, then this book is for you.

2. The Lifegiving Home: Creating a Place of Belonging and Becoming by Sally and Sarah Clarkson

life giving home book homemaker books

Goodreads Book Description

“How to make home your family’s favorite place to be . . . all year long.

Does your home sometimes feel like just a place to eat, sleep, and change clothes on the way to the next activity? Do you long for “home” to mean more than a place where you stash your stuff? Wouldn’t you love it to become a haven of warmth, rest, and joy . . . the one place where you and your family can’t wait to be?

There is good news waiting for you in the pages of The Lifegiving Home. Every day of your family’s life can be as special and important to you as it already is to God. In this unique book designed to help your family enjoy and celebrate every month of the year together, you’ll discover the secrets of a life-giving home from a mother who created one and her daughter who was raised in popular authors Sally and Sarah Clarkson. Together they offer a rich treasure of wise advice, spiritual principles, and practical suggestions. You’ll embark on a new path to creating special memories for your children; establishing home-building and God-centered traditions; and cultivating an environment in which your family will flourish. “

Why I Loved This Book

I have never felt so seen as I did while reading this book. I love my mom, but if God gave me a chance to choose one other person on this planet to be my mother, I would choose Sally Clarkson.

From the relationships with her children, the love of beauty in all God’s creation, the intentionality in the little things – every word spoke to my soul.

I especially love how this book is laid out in a 12 month format. The specific detail and instruction for each month and season is exceptional, especially for my ADHD heart that can get overwhelmed with too much information and my catastrophic anxiety that would over analyze when and how to implement this amazing advice.

This book made me not only be proud of my role as a homemaker, but to really step into the gifts and calling of it; from bedtime blessings with my children to setting the table for dinner every night and the in between of tea parties and seasonal traditions.

  • If you are a mama who is looking for ways to create a space of tradition, joy, and beauty – this book is for you.
  • If you are a woman who longs to create a space of warmth and comfort – this book is for you!

Why I Loved This Book

Last year, right around this time, I was praying over what to do about school for Andy. We were in the trenches of Kindergarten, and while I loved his school and his teacher, I did not love the hustle and hurry, the homework, and the anticipation of losing our precious time together.

That could verbatim be how this book starts. So, imagine my emotional self listening to this audiobook while driving home after dusk one weary and cold night in February.

I cried. Like, ugly girl cried in my car. I felt, in that moment, that God was calling me to homeschool. And I was terrified.

This book did such an amazing job of illustrating the joys and battles of homeschooling, the different methods, and the incredible gifts that come with living wild + free.

  • If you are contemplating homeschooling, then this book is for you.
  • If you are a seasoned homeschooler looking for something to inspire you, this is for you.
  • If you want to create more wonder in your life AND your kids lives, then this book is for you.

4. The Read-Aloud Family: Making Meaningful and Lasting Connections with Your Kids by Sarah Mackenzie

read aloud family book favorite books

Goodreads Book Description

“Connecting deeply with our kids can be difficult in our busy, technology-driven lives. Reading aloud offers us a chance to be fully present with our children. It also increases our kids’ academic success, inspires compassion, and fortifies them with the inner strength they need to face life’s challenges. As Sarah Mackenzie has found with her own six children, reading aloud long after kids are able to read to themselves can deepen relationships in a powerful way.

Founder of the immensely popular Read-Aloud Revival podcast, Sarah knows first-hand how reading can change a child’s life. In The Read-Aloud Family, she offers the inspiration and age-appropriate book lists you need to start a read-aloud movement in your own home. From a toddler’s wonder to a teenager’s resistance, Sarah details practical strategies to make reading aloud a meaningful family ritual. Reading aloud not only has the power to change a family—it has the power to change the world.”

Why I Loved This Book

Clearly reading is my passion, so there was no doubt I had to hear what this mama of six had to say about reading aloud with your family.

Reading aloud is something I have done since the moment my kids were born. With my first, my anxiety was so bad I had no idea what to do, so I would read to him.

Since that moment, our home has always been brimming with books; chapter books, picture books, educational books.

Sarah does such an incredible job of sharing the science behind why reading aloud is so beneficial for families. My favorite thing about this book is that she gives incredible recommendations for every age level! It has been a handy library companion this year!

  • If you love to read and love reading to your children, then this is for you.
  • If you want to foster a love of reading in your family, then this is for you.
  • If you are looking for resources to encourage reading as a family, this is for you!

5. Teaching from Rest: A Homeschooler’s Guide to Unshakable Peace by Sarah Mackenzie

teach from rest book homeschool books

Amazon Book Description

“Those who have made the decision to homeschool their children have done so out of great love for them and a desire to provide them an excellent education in the context of a warm, enriching home. Yet so many parents (mainly mothers) who have taken up this challenge find the enterprise often full of stress, worry, and anxiety. In this practical, faith-based, and inspirational book, Sarah Mackenzie addresses these questions directly, appealing to her own study of restful learning and her struggle to bring restful learning to her (six) children.”

Why I Loved it

If I had an author of the year, I guess it would be Sarah Mackenzie. I honestly didn’t even realize at first that this book and the Read Aloud Family were the same author.

This was such an encouragement to read before we started homeschooling this year. Sarah gives practical advice while saturating the pages with Biblical encouragement.

This book for sure felt like I was talking over all the trials and triumphs of our homeschool journey with my best friend.

  • If you are about to start homeschooling, read this book.

“Mama of ten Abbie Halberstadt helps women humbly and gracefully rise to the high calling of motherhood without settling for mediocrity or losing their minds in the process.

Motherhood is a challenge. Unfortunately, our worldly culture offers moms little in the way of real help. Mamas only connect to celebrate surviving another day and to share in their misery rather than rejoice in what God has done and to build each other up in hard times.

There has a be a better way, a biblical way, for mamas to grow and thrive.

M is for Mama  offers advice, encouragement, and scripturally sound strategies seasoned with a little bit of humor to help you embrace the challenge of biblical motherhood and raise your children with love and wisdom.

Mama, you are worthy of the awesome responsibility God has given you.  Now it’s time to start believing you can live up to it.”

Why I Loved This Book

Holy gut punch. Like, really. This book wrecked me in the best way possible. It was convicting, challenging, and had me crying in repentance more than a few times.

But, that’s what makes this book so great. In the hard is the beauty of what we can become as mothers if we allow the Lord to work within us instead of bowing down to mediocre motherhood!

This book completely changed how I view my role as a mother and challenged me to take that role with every ounce of gratitude and honor I have.

I will definitely be reading this repeatedly.

  • If you are a Christian mama, you need to read this.
  • If you are an expecting Christian mama, you need to read this (I think this would make an excellent baby shower gift).

Why I Loved This Book

Ok, truth bomb. I had this on my reading wish list for like 2-3 years before I finally read it (maybe even longer). It sounded good but I never actually made the move to purchase it.

I had acquired a lot of audible credits and figured it was time to cash in. I am so thankful I did.

This book was profoundly influential. I immediately implored my husband to read it too. We both would stand in the kitchen talking about how simple the tactics James described were, but how we had never thought to apply them before.

I can honestly say I would not have been able to cultivate our homeschool rhythm without the tools I learned in this book. It has also been life changing for how to better manage my ADHD when it comes to consistency – especially in writing!

  • If you have goals you are striving to achieve, then read this book.
  • If you want to build better habits but don’t know where to start, then this book is for you.

Introducing Motherhood Mondays – Celebrating First-Time Joy With Faith And Love

Celebrating the joy of motherhood

As the New Year dawns, we stand on the precipice of countless new beginnings, a myriad of fresh starts waiting to unfold. It’s a time that invites us to reflect and embrace the joy of ‘firsts’.

As mothers, we are no strangers to this joy. Every day brings a new ‘first’ in our journey with our little (or big) ones. With that, each one is a precious moment that tugs at our heartstrings and fills us with an indescribable sense of love and pride.

So, on this first day of the year, let’s delve into wonderland as we recount (or anticipate) these magical ‘firsts’ that make our journey of motherhood so special.

The First Smile

The first smile of your baby is truly a magical moment that words cannot fully capture. It is an experience that fills your heart with overflowing joy and floods your soul with an overwhelming sense of love and tenderness. It is as if time stands still, and all the worries and hardships of the world fade away in that precious instant.

As you gaze into your little one’s eyes, you can’t help but be consumed by the pure and innocent beauty that radiates from their tiny face. That delicate curve of their lips holds the power to melt away any weariness that may have settled within you. It is a silent yet profound declaration that your baby feels safe, secure, and loved in your arms.

In that moment, you realize that you are witnessing a little piece of heaven on earth. The world seems to become a brighter, more hopeful place, as if the universe itself is celebrating this joyous milestone alongside you. You are filled with a deep sense of gratitude for the blessing of being a parent and for the opportunity to witness such precious and fleeting expressions of your baby’s growing personality.

That first smile becomes etched in your memory as a priceless keepsake, a treasure that you will carry with you throughout your journey of parenthood. You will look back on it in years to come and reminisce about the sweetness of those early days, the moments of connection and pure happiness that your baby brought into your life.

Hard is not the same as bad

Are there hard, catastrophically anxious days? Oh, yes. But, as one of my favorite authors and mama of 10 says, “hard is not the same as bad.”

As the years pass, that first smile will remain a cherished memory, a reminder of the love that has grown and flourished between you and your child. It will serve as a testament to the beauty and wonder of parenthood. And, it will remind you that even in the midst of chaos and challenges, there is always a reason to smile and find joy in the little things.

So, treasure that first smile, hold it close to your heart, and let it serve as a reminder of the tremendous love and happiness that your baby has brought (and will continue to bring) into your life.

Embrace every smile that follows, for each one is a precious gift that will continue to brighten your days and fill your life with endless moments of pure bliss.

The First Word

joy of the first word

Whether it’s “mama”, “dada”, or something entirely unexpected, the first word your child utters is music to your ears. It’s a testament to their growing understanding of the world around them, a small yet significant step in their cognitive development. It’s a moment of pure joy that makes all those sleepless nights worth it (well, almost).

As a parent, hearing your child’s first words is an indescribable feeling. It’s like witnessing a miracle unfolding before your eyes. You’ve spent countless hours nurturing them, teaching them, and guiding them through every milestone. And when they finally utter that first word, it’s as if they’re opening a whole new world to you.

The choice of their first word can be quite amusing. Some children blurt out “mama” or “dada,” while others surprise us with something unexpected. Whatever it may be, that first word is a tiny glimpse into their personality and the way they perceive the world. It’s a daily reminder that they are growing, learning, and developing into their own unique selves.

Beyond the sheer joy of hearing their voice, that first word also marks an important milestone in their cognitive development. It signifies that they have grasped the concept of language and communication. It shows that they can understand and express themselves, even if their vocabulary is still limited.

However, it’s not just about the word itself; it’s about the connection and bond that is strengthened every time they utter it. Hearing your child call out to you, their eyes sparkling with excitement, fills your heart with an overwhelming sense of love and pride. It’s a reminder that you are their safe haven, their comfort, and their guide in this vast and sometimes overwhelming world.

So, cherish those first words and celebrate every new word they learn. Encourage their language development by talking, reading, and singing to them. Engage in conversations, even if they are mostly one-sided at first. Show them that their words have power, that their thoughts and feelings matter.

Remember that language is not only a tool for communication, but also a gateway to their emotional and intellectual growth. Through words, they will explore new ideas, ask questions, and express their dreams and aspirations. And as a parent, you have the incredible privilege of being their first and most important language teacher.

So, savor those magical moments when their first words fill the air – no matter how quickly or delayed that it. They are the sweet melodies that nourish your soul and remind you that the journey of parenthood is filled with countless precious milestones. Embrace each word, each sound, and know that you are witnessing the blossoming of a beautiful mind and heart.

The First Step

The first step your child takes is a celebration of their determination and resilience. It’s a moment that encapsulates their journey of growth and development, filled with countless little victories along the way. From the early days of crawling to the wobbly attempts at standing, you’ve been there, an unwavering presence of love and support.

As their cheerleader and support system, you’ve witnessed their progress, celebrated their milestones, and cheered them on through every stumble and fall. Your role as a parent has been instrumental in shaping their confidence and nurturing their independence. You have provided a safe and nurturing environment, guiding them with patience and encouragement.

And now, as you watch in awe, your heart swells with both pride and joy as they take that first, hesitant step towards independence. It’s a landmark moment that marks the beginning of a new chapter in their lives, as they navigate the world on their own two feet.

In that moment, you realize that all the sleepless nights, the countless diaper changes, and the endless hours of soothing their cries are all to create the confidence this child needs to further embrace their next foundational endeavor. This milestone is a testament to their determination, but it’s also a testament to your dedication and unwavering support as a parent.

So, as they take that first step, remember to relish in the moment. Capture it in your memory as a reminder of the incredible bond you share and the extraordinary journey you’re both embarking on. It’s a moment to pause, reflect, and be grateful for the beautiful gift of parenthood.

The First Day of School

The first day of school is a bag of mixed emotions. There’s excitement, anticipation, and a touch of anxiety too. But above all, it’s a day of immense pride. As you watch your little one step into the world of learning, you realize how much they’ve grown, how far they’ve come. It’s a milestone that marks the beginning of a new chapter in their life, and yours too.

On this special day, the air is filled with a sense of possibility. The hallways echo with laughter and greetings from old friends reuniting after the summer break, as well as the sound of new friendships being formed. It’s a time for making memories and embracing new experiences.

For parents, seeing their child take their first steps into school can be both exciting and bittersweet. It’s a reminder of just how quickly time passes and how their little ones are growing up. It’s a moment when parents realize that their role is evolving too, from being the sole provider and protector to becoming a guide and cheerleader on their child’s educational journey.

As a parent, you may recall your own first day of school, the nerves and the thrill of the unknown. It’s a chance to share your stories and impart wisdom to your child, while also allowing them to forge their own path. Encourage them to be curious, to ask questions, and to embrace all the opportunities that come their way.

It’s natural to feel a mix of emotions as your child embarks on this new chapter. You may experience a sense of pride, knowing that you’ve nurtured and prepared them for this moment. At the same time, you might also feel a twinge of sadness, realizing that they are taking their first steps towards independence.

But rest assured, as they walk through the school gates, they are not alone. The teachers are there to guide, support, and inspire them. The school community is a rich tapestry of students, parents, and staff, all working together to create a nurturing and stimulating environment.

These same mixed emotions are true when homeschooling. While I may not have the anxieties I did while my child was inside a building, I still worry all the time about if I am doing enough, doing it right, or making a mistake. All the while, I am praising the Lord for the time we get together, the memories being made, and the opportunity to learn to grow slow.

So, on this momentous day, whether homeschooling or going into a building, cherish the joy that swells within you. Celebrate the journey of growth and learning that lies ahead for your child. And remember, the first day of school is just the beginning of an exciting adventure that will shape their future. Embrace this milestone and savor the beautiful moments that await.

5 Tips to Take the Stress out of Christmas

5 Tips to take the stress out of Christmas

5 Tips to Take the Stress out of Christmas

Holiday stress got you feeling more Scrooge than Santa? You’re not alone. The holidays are a hectic time for many of us. But there are ways to make the season a little brighter and a little less stressful, so we can focus on the true reason for the season – Jesus. Here are five simple tips to simplify your Christmas season and take some of the stress out of it.

1. Make a List and Check It Twice (or Thrice)

Stress less this season by making a list

One of the best things you can do is make a list…and check it twice (or thrice). Seriously, getting all your holiday tasks down on paper (or in your phone) can help you feel more organized and in control. Not sure where to start? Make a list of everything you need to do between now and the end of the year, including shopping, wrapping, baking, card-writing, travel plans, party preparations, and anything else that’s on your plate.

Once you have your complete list, start tackling each item one by one. Checking things off as you go will help you stay focused and motivated, and it’ll also give you a much-needed sense of accomplishment. And when it comes to holiday stress, every little bit helps! your lists, check them twice (or even thrice!) to make sure everything is accounted for.

2. Start Early

Stress less by planning ahead
Photo by Olena Bohovyk on Pexels.com

If the holidays tend to be a stressful time for you, then you’re not alone. In fact, a recent survey found that nearly 60% of Americans experience increased stress during the holiday season. One of the best ways to reduce holiday stress is to start your preparations early. That way, you can avoid the last-minute rush and enjoy the festive season at a more leisurely pace. Of course, starting early doesn’t mean you have to start decorating your home in October. But it does mean taking care of some of the essential tasks when you can.

There are only so many hours in a day and even fewer during the holidays when things really start ramping up—so get a head start on all those tasks now! Start shopping early so you don’t have to worry about running out of time or being stuck with limited options come Christmas Eve. And if you plan on hosting any gatherings, begin planning right away so you don’t find yourself scrambling at the last minute trying to pull everything together.

3. Set Realistic Expectations

The holidays are a time for family, friends, and, unfortunately, stress. There’s the pressure to find the perfect gifts, make everything from scratch, and host the most idyllic holiday gathering ever. It’s enough to make even the most cheerful person want to pull their hair out. But before you do, take a deep breath and remind yourself that the holidays don’t have to be perfect. In fact, they’re often more enjoyable when they’re not.

Listen – I know It’s easy to get caught up in wanting your holiday season to look just like those perfectly staged photos on Instagram, but chances are those ideal photos aren’t reflective of reality—so set realistic expectations for yourself and your family this holiday season. You don’t have to do it all; focus on what matters most and let go of anything that doesn’t bring joy!

4. Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff

don't stress the mess

The holidays are a time for joy, laughter, and love. But they can also be a time of stress and anxiety. Remember not to sweat the small stuff this holiday season! If something isn’t going exactly as planned or if something goes awry at the last minute, take a deep breath and move on. The holidays are supposed to be fun, so don’t let the little things ruin your mood. After all, your family won’t care if there’s one less side dish or if Grandma’s present arrives late; they’ll still be just as happy and grateful for each other’s company regardless!

Make sure to schedule some “me” time into your holiday plans. Whether it’s taking a long bath or going for a walk in the park, make sure to carve out some time to relax and de-stress. Finally, remember that it’s okay to say no. If you’re feeling overwhelmed with holiday parties or family gatherings, it’s perfectly acceptable to politely decline an invitation.

5. Rely On Others For Help

By far the hardest tip for me to personally adhere to is asking and relying on others for help.  If you’re like me, you want to do it all yourself because you know everyone has a full plate right now.  But, the thing is, no one can do it all alone—it takes a village! So don’t be afraid to ask others for help when you need it most this holiday season; friends, family members, neighbors…they’re all great resources who would likely love nothing more than being able to lend a helping hand during this busy time of year!

Whether it’s pitching in with the cooking or offering to drive Auntie Marge to the airport, a little assistance can go a long way. So if you’re feeling stressed this holiday season, remember that it’s okay to ask for help. After all, that’s what loved ones are for.

Conclusion: This holiday season doesn’t have to be stressful—by following these five tips, you can simplify things and focus on what really matters most: spending quality time with loved ones while celebrating God’s goodness in our lives! Merry Christmas!

Naturally Well Series: The Truth about Postnatal Depletion

DISCLAIMER:

All information in and of this post is for educational purposes only. If you or any other person has a medical concern, you should consult with your health care provider or seek other professional medical treatment immediately. Never disregard professional medical advice or delay in seeking it because of something that you have read on this blog, website or in any linked materials.

Let me be vulnerable for a minute.

Becoming a mother is the most amazingly beautiful and heart stopping experience, but, if we’re honest, it is also overwhelmingly stressful.  Disclaimer 2 – acknowledging that motherhood is stressful does not mean I think that motherhood is bad.

After I had my first son I went through almost a year of postpartum depression and anxiety.  Like many new moms, I had no idea what was going on, and (arguably more frightening) I didn’t know how to fix it.

I am going to give you full permission in case no one has yet, that you can love being a mom and still feel like you’re going crazy.

And crazy is exactly how I felt.

I was completely immersed in joy one moment, and the next I felt as though I was gasping for breath amidst crashing waves of anxiety.  I was desperate and hurting and to the point where I would do anything to feel “normal” enough to take care of and enjoy my son.

I slowly started to research my symptoms and educated myself, becoming all too familiar with postpartum depression.  Concerned with how little this was discussed, and wanting to advocate for others who were struggling, I started this blog.  That was in 2017.

Flash forward two years, I had just given birth to my daughter after experiencing a very traumatic miscarriage.  I was so thankful to hold my sweet girl Earth side that I didn’t even think about the darkness that was looming ahead.

It was around this time that I began a journey I never knew I needed.

A friend had invited me to a webinar about something called Postnatal Depletion.

I was intrigued.  You rarely hear people talk about postpartum depression, you never hear people talk about postnatal depletion.

I walked away from that webinar in tears, never feeling so seen or understood in my short years as a mother.

What I learned in that webinar changed the scope of my health and wellness.  I started implementing changes slowly, and began to feel my mental and physical health transform.

You can click here to watch the webinar that started the small changes. Scroll to the end to watch the updated version.

Hit the button to fast forward to 2022.

I now have three beautiful babies, the youngest a minted and jolly ONE!! My whole pregnancy and postpartum experience with my third child had completely evolved from the tsunami I felt with my first.

Within the last several years I have continued to educate myself and advocate for others who might be feeling the same sense of frustration and confusion that I did as a new mom.

What I have learned is that simple steps lead to big results and knowing more empowers us to live better. And I am going to share some of that knowledge here with you.

What is Postnatal Depletion?

It’s common, but it’s not normal.

Read that again.

Postnatal depletion is a physical and mental deterioration caused not just by the process of giving birth and breastfeeding, but by the stresses and strains of modern parenthood.

In his book, The Postnatal Depletion Cure, Dr. Serrallach describes postnatal depletion as a syndrome of accumulated issues including deep fatigue, hyper-vigilance and a feeling of being overwhelmed.

What mother doesn’t feel overwhelmed? Am I right? This makes us feel like postnatal depletion is not a real thing.  But it is.

Society doesn’t help as we live in this instagram and pinterest world.  High five to the influencers out there embracing the real and raw.

So, let’s talk about the symptoms of PND.

  • Fatigue and exhaustion
  • Tired upon waking
  • Hyper vigilant (“tired and wired”)
  • Loss of libido
  • Sense of being overwhelmed

We often refer to these symptoms as “mom brain” and contribute our exhaustion to “that’s just how it is.”  But what if it doesn’t have to be?

Let’s consider the causes of PND

  • High stress society
  • Age of giving birth
  • Starting pregnancy depleted
  • Not refueling between pregnancies
  • Sleep
  • Lack of nutrient dense food
  • Environmental pollutants

Yes, lots of these things are out of our control, but there is hope and ways we can help our mind and bodies!

There is hope and there are some simple solutions to help.

SLEEP

Naturally Well Series | January 2022 | Postnatal Depletion | Sleep

A big way we can refuel our bodies to fight against postnatal depletion is sleep.  This is such a rough solution because sleep can be rough through all stages of motherhood, not just for new moms (I have a five year old who still gets in bed with us – just me?).

According to Terry Cralle, an RN, certified clinical sleep expert and the spokesperson for the Better Sleep Council, the myth of the supermom is pushing moms to prioritize all kinds of things over their own rest, and it’s hurting us.

Unfortunately, most articles try to articulate ways to improve your quantity of sleep, not your quality.  Getting a sufficient amount of sleep will mean nothing to your body if it doesn’t have what it needs to repair itself.

Ways to improve your quality of sleep:

  • Calcium/Magnesium

I think it is fascinating that our bodies were created to know that once a baby is in your belly, they get first dibs on ALL the nutrients you consume/produce. This was one of the most interesting things I learned when I began to educate myself on postnatal depletion. Not only does this duo help with sleep, it will also help prevent late night leg cramps and dental cavities.

  • Ashwagandha

According to sleepfoundation.org, “Preliminary research has found that ashwagandha may help people fall asleep faster, spend more time asleep, and experience better sleep quality.  Ashwagandha is an herb known as an adaptogen, that helps to protect the body.  Ashwagandha is also said to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and can help naturally treat anxiety, cognitive impairments, and even diabetes.

Energy

Naturally Well Series | January 2022 | Postnatal Depletion | Energy
  • Sleep

It just makes sense that when we get quality sleep, our body can create energy more efficiently. Harvard Medical School recognized “Someone whose deep sleep is restricted will wake up feeling less refreshed than a person who got adequate deep sleep. When a sleep-deprived person gets some sleep, he or she will pass quickly through the lighter sleep stages into the deeper stages and spend a greater proportion of time there, suggesting that deep sleep fills an essential role in a person’s optimal functioning.”

  • Exercise

I love how Harper Guerra (@guerrahealth) encourages us that exercise is about “health not figure.”  We hear the word exercise and think we need to hit the gym or become a crossfit athlete.  But the truth is, you just need to move your body. Harper also advocates for moms to get creative, suggesting using babies and toddlers as weights for squats!  (I can attest that they love this.)

  • Iron, B Vitamins, Vitamin D3

Ten to one you tell me you have this in your multivitamin.  You can find them (or should find them) in your prenatals.  But, did you know these are 3 of the hardest vitamins for our bodies to absorb?  Moreover, the FDA doesn’t regulate supplements, so the integrity of a company is crucial in finding quality tested, pure ingredients. Proper absorption and pure vitamins are the best way to help refuel your body with natural energy.

Nutrition

Naturally Well Series | January 2022 | Postnatal Depletion | Nutrition
  • Protein

Protein is a critical part of the processes that fuel your energy and carry oxygen throughout your body in your blood. It also helps make antibodies that fight off infections and illnesses and it helps keep cells healthy and allows the body to create new ones.  In the busy culture we have created, moms need to be intentional about refueling our bodies with what they need (and not just grabbing and going or picking off the kids plate)!

  • Vegetables

Be honest.  How many veggies do you consume in a week?  The cdc recommends that women eat 2-3 cups of green veggies a week.  Since the baby is getting first dibs of all those nutrients, you want to make sure you are eating clean and organic or taking sufficient supplements to make up for the loss of nutrient density in cooking or quality.

  • Nutrient Density

So many things have contributed to the continuing loss of density in nutrients. According to Scientific American’s article Vanishing Nutrients, “rising carbon dioxide levels are making our food less nutritious, robbing key crops of vitamins essential to human development.”  Basically, you can eat your 2-3 recommended cups of veggies or your recommended protein, but it means nothing if the nutrients aren’t there.

Gut Health & Hormones

Naturally Well Series | January 2022 | Postnatal Depletion | Gut Health & Hormones
  • Fun Facts:

Do you know how much our gut influences how we feel?

40% of brain receptors in our gut

70% of the immune system is in our gut

95% of serotonin is made in our gut

https://www.healthline.com/health/digestive-health/things-your-gut-wants-you-to-know#7.-Sleep-in-on-the-weekends

Your gut health MATTERS.

  • Omega 3’s

Omega 3’s are one of the top depletions in women.  Omega 3’s also influence babies brain, skin, eyes, as well as ours.  Omega 3’s are also one of the least eaten and consumed nutrients for most people.

  • Omega 6’s

Omega 6 is also known as GLA (Gamma-linolenic acid). It’s found in various plant seed oils such as borage oil and evening primrose oil.  GLA helps to balance hormones, which is essential in combating postnatal depletion.

What we put into our body matters.

As I said in the beginning, postnatal depletion is common, but it’s not normal.  Thankfully, there are ways we can refuel ourselves from the depletion.

Personally, finding natural sources to refuel is a priority in my life. Unfortunately, as we noted above, most foods – the most natural form of consuming most of these things we’re depleted of – are not nearly as nutrient dense as they once were.

Therefore, supplementation is key.  But not all supplements are created equal, and finding a company you can trust is vital to experiencing transformational change.

I want to share my MVR (Most Valuable Resource) with you; Shaklee.

Clinical Results Without Compromise

Dr. Forrest Shaklee created the first multivitamin in the US in 1915.  From there, the innovation, integrity, and intense testing has created the bandwagon for the boom in the health and wellness business.

Dr. Shaklee knew the importance of sharing ways to be naturally well and Shaklee Corporation was created over 65 years ago.

The Shaklee Difference

Probably my most favorite thing about Shaklee, and a big reason I chose to partner with them, is their transparency and confidence in what they are doing.

Shaklee believes in the safety and proven performance of all their products.  If you are not satisfied with any of their products, you can send them back for a FULL REFUND – even if the container is empty –  NO QUESTIONS ASKED!

How to Make Safe Homemade Play-dough

How to Make Safe Homemade Play-dough

That kids will LOVE!

Back when the world was sheltering in place (whether we agreed with it or not), children and adults were growing restless.  As both a mom of little ones, and someone who struggles with anxiety and depression, I had been tirelessly searching for ways to keep my children entertained- and myself sane.

Insert my unashamed Pinterest pitch; In the few hours that I don’t have three tiny humans clinging to me, asking for more snacks, or needing a butt to be wiped, you can find me exhaustively scrolling Pinterest for fun ideas and inspiration (home decor, fitness routines, cute tees, type 4 quotes, healthy recipes, essential oil combos, good books to read, pretty scripture quotes – just to name a few 😉 ). Honestly, we probably make about 30% of what I pin.

So I was really excited when I found a homemade play dough recipe that I was able to (ever so slightly) tweak and make SAFE for both Andy (3 at the time) AND Emma (1 then).

In the sea of homemade play dough made with baby oil or other potentially toxic ingredients, this particular recipe was made with real ingredients I already cook with – ensuring that even my little tubby could participate in this activity (don’t you just love the “put everything in mouth” season).

Now, almost two years later, the restlessness is in full swing as the weather anticipates the midwest’s shift in seasons.  This time I am also trying to keep the attention of three little minds, not two.

Having worked with some amazing special education therapists, I am well aware of the benefits of sensory play, so I decided to bring out and share this tried and true recipe.

As winter break approaches, I thought this could be useful for the days when even the most calm kids get a little stir crazy, or need a boredom buster, or want to try a new science experiment for homeschool.  Whatever the reason, I promise your kids will love this.

NOTES

Before you jump to the recipe, I wanted to share a little bit about why and which essential oils we added into our playdough.

  • This makes the play-dough smell amazing
  • Certain oils can aid in anxiety relief
  • Therapeutic benefits of sensory stimulation

Here are the oils we choose and why:

  1. Lavender: Lavender oil has been used and cherished for centuries for its unmistakable aroma and myriad benefits. In ancient times, the Egyptians and Romans used Lavender for bathing, relaxation, cooking, and as a perfume. REVIEW

This is not an exaggeration: my kids sat still for more than an hour as we played, formed, and created with our favorite activity.  We added colors to match our scents and enjoyed the therapeutic benefits of all the sensory stimulation we were getting! If you want to add non toxic, all natural food coloring, I suggest checking out these kitchen hacks.

One of my favorite aspects of making this is the shelf life!  The fun can continue for the next couple weeks!  We keep our play dough stored in an airtight container – preserving both the texture and sweet smells!!

In conclusion, If you are looking for a way to calm the kids, have some fun, stimulate the senses, or relieve stress of your own (I don’t know who got more out of this  – me or the kids), then this is for you!

Try it out and make sure to comment and let me know how it goes!!
