Makeup Expiration Education – How to Know When It’s Time To Restock

makeup expiration

Ladies, welcome back to another Beauty Tip Tuesday! Today, we’re going to talk about something that many of us may not consider when it comes to our makeup and beauty products: expiration dates.

Long before cosmetology school, I always had a passion for makeup and skincare. I would give classmates “makeovers” in algebra, dye my friends hair in my bathroom (never use black box dye in a white bathroom – sorry mom).

Once I had my cosmetology license, I had the opportunity to do hair and makeup for big events like the American Idol Finale in 2010. I worked with top tier beauty companies like Mary Kay. And, I did hair and makeup for over 50 weddings (including my own)!

As women, we spend countless amounts of money on cosmetics to improve our appearance and boost our confidence.

However, it’s also important to ensure that the products we use are safe and not harmful to our skin.

So, let’s dive into the importance of makeup expiration education!

What are expiration dates in makeup?

Expiration dates are dates that manufacturers put on products to suggest how long they are safe and effective to use. These dates indicate how long a product can be used safely before it begins to break down, bacteria starts to grow, or loses its effectiveness.

Makeup products, such as mascara, eyeliners, and lipsticks, can often cause harm to our skin if not used correctly or when expired. It’s important to understand the different symbols and meanings behind expiration dates.

Some products may have a ‘best before’ date, while others may have a period-after-opening (PAO) symbol.

Just like its important to check labels in the grocery store, my hope is that this will help you become more habitual and intentional about checking expiration of your makeup.

makeup expiration symbols
PAO symbols will look like this.

Why is it important to heed expiration dates?

Using expired products can cause irritation, redness, rashes, clogged pores, and even infections.

Old products can also lose their effectiveness and not perform as they should. Expired makeup can foster the growth of bacteria and other harmful germs, which can cause eye infections or even serious health issues like staph infections.

Not to mention, using expired makeup products can also seriously harm your skin and eyes. Therefore, always pay attention to the expiration dates of beauty and makeup products.

If you wouldn’t put an expired meat or other food in your body, do not put expired makeup on your skin.

How to inspect makeup expiration dates

Now that you know how important it is to use makeup responsibly, let’s talk about how to inspect makeup expiration dates.

The first place to check is the packaging of the product. The packaging usually contains information on the expiry time period or even symbols which indicate when a product is best for use.

You can also look for any changes in the product’s makeup, such as the following;

  • Changes in color, texture, or smell: If you notice that your makeup has changed in color or texture, or if it has a strange smell, it is likely that it has expired.
  • Separation of liquids: In liquid products like foundation or mascara, if you see the product separating into different layers, it’s time to throw it away.
  • Products drying out: Powders, eyeshadows, blush, and other dry makeup products tend to become harder or may crack when expired.
  • Irritation when applied: If applying a product causes redness, irritation, or a rash that it didn’t before, it’s time to replace it.

If you still are not sure, you can also check out this neat and free tool to calculate the expiration of your makeup. Just click HERE!

When to replace expired makeup

It’s safe to say that regularly inspecting makeup expiration dates is a great way to ensure that our beauty arsenal stays safe to use.

But when is it the right time to replace your makeup?

There are a few general guidelines you can follow.

  1. Mascara typically lasts for about three months
  2. Eyeliners and lipsticks last for six to twelve months.
  3. Powders, including eye shadows, foundation, and blushes, usually last around a year and a half

Additionally, if you’ve had an infection or been sick, it’s best to toss everything and start fresh. Remember, it’s much better to be safe than sorry when it comes to expired makeup.

Final thoughts on makeup expiration

In conclusion, taking care of our skin and using makeup responsibly is essential. Learning about makeup expiration dates can save you from experiencing harmful side effects on your skin or expending more money when the products go bad.

Regularly check your beauty and makeup products for expiry dates, change in texture, or color signs and follow the recommendations related to replacing products when necessary.

By doing so, we can keep our skin looking flawless and healthy, and keep ourselves looking beautiful and radiant all year round.

Keep your makeup fresh and healthy, so you can always look and feel your best!

Tuesday Beauty Tips: The Ultimate Guide to Skincare Routines

The ultimate guide to SkinCare Routines

Welcome to the first Tuesday Beauty Tips Series! Today, we’re going to explore The Ultimate Guide to Skincare Routines.

As someone who has struggled with dry skin, I’ve tried my fair share of skincare products. In this post, I’ll be sharing my personal favorites along with some helpful guidelines about skincare routines to assist and encourage you on your own journey to healthy, glowing skin.

Before diving into product recommendations, let me tell you a little bit about why I am the gal pal to deliver this knowledge to you!

License to Skincare

Skincare cosemetologist

I am uniquely qualified to guide you through your skincare journey because I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist for over 15 years. My vast experience in the beauty industry includes working with some of the top skincare companies. This is where I’ve gained insight into the science behind effective skincare.

Additionally, I hold a high standard for the ingredients used in skincare products. Therefore, I always emphasize thorough research before recommending any product.

This extensive background ensures you’re getting expert advice backed by years of professional experience and diligent scrutiny in skincare selection.

Identifying Skin Types

Before we learn the ultimate guide to skincare, we need to first figure out our skin type. If you do not already know, here is how to tell which skin type you have + how best to take care of it.

Determining your skin type is critical as it forms the basis of your skincare regimen. The most common skin types are dry, oily, combination, and sensitive.

Dry Skin

dry skincare
Photo by Jenna Hamra on Pexels.com

Dry skin is characterized by a lack of moisture in the skin, which can lead to a rough, flaky, or scaly appearance. You may notice that your skin feels tight, especially after washing. It might also look dull and lackluster, due to a buildup of dead skin cells on the surface.

Dry skin is often sensitive to weather changes, feeling excessively dry in cold or windy conditions. You may also experience occasional red patches.

If these signs are familiar, chances are you have a dry skin type.

Oily Skin

oily skincare

Oily skin type is typically characterized by an excess production of sebum, the skin’s natural oil, which can lead to a shiny or greasy appearance.

Individuals with oily skin often have enlarged pores and may struggle with issues such as blackheads, pimples, or other types of acne.

The skin may feel oily to the touch, especially in the T-zone area (the forehead, nose, and chin). Despite washing your face, you might notice oiliness reappearing within a few hours.

If these symptoms resonate with you, you likely fall into the oily skin category.

Combination Skin

combination skincare

Combination skin is often recognized as having traits of both dry and oily skin types, usually distributed in different regions of your face.

You may observe your skin to be oily in the T-zone area (forehead, nose, and chin) and dry or normal on the cheeks and around the eyes.

This skin type can manifest as shiny skin and enlarged pores in the T-zone with the possibility of blackheads, while areas such as the cheeks feel dry and could even be flaky or rough.

Dealing with this skin type can feel like you’re fighting two battles at once – managing oil production in some areas and replenishing moisture in others. But, with the right care and tailored skincare routine, balance can be achieved. And, the result is healthy, glowing skin.

If these characteristics sound familiar, you probably have combination skin.

Sensitive Skin

sensitive skincare

Sensitive skin is often characterized by a heightened tendency towards inflammation and adverse reactions when exposed to certain triggers.

You might experience feelings of tightness, discomfort, or even burning, especially after using certain skincare products or cosmetics. Redness, itching, and flaking are common indicators, as well as the frequent emergence of rashes or bumps.

If your skin reacts quickly to changes in the weather or environmental factors like wind or sun exposure, or if it takes an unusually long time to calm down after a reaction, you likely have sensitive skin.

Remember, having sensitive skin requires careful selection of skincare products. It’s advisable to patch-test new products before full application and opt for products labeled ‘hypoallergenic’ or ‘for sensitive skin’.

If these symptoms align with your experience, you likely have sensitive skin.

Building a Basic Skincare Routine

basic skincare

Now, let’s understand the basics of a skincare routine.

A basic skincare routine consists of three steps: cleansing, toning, and moisturizing.

Cleansing helps to remove dirt, oil, and makeup from the skin.
Toning helps to balance the skin’s pH levels and prepare it for moisturizer.
Moisturizing helps to hydrate the skin and prevent dryness or reduce excessive oil.

Cleanser

Choosing the right cleanser for your skin type is a vital first step in your skincare routine.

  • For those with dry skin, opt for a hydrating cleanser that is free from harsh chemicals which can strip the skin of its natural oils, instead look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin that support moisture retention.
  • If you have oily skin, a foaming cleanser can help to effectively remove excess oil without causing irritation. Salicylic acid is a beneficial ingredient for this skin type as it helps to unclog pores and control oil production.
  • For those with sensitive skin, a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser is ideal to avoid skin irritations.
  • Lastly, if you have combination skin, a balanced cleanser that can regulate oil production without over-drying areas of the skin is key.

Remember, the best cleanser for you is not always the most expensive one, but the one that suits your skin type and leaves your skin feeling clean and refreshed.

Toner + Moisturizer

Selecting the right toner and moisturizer for your skin type is the next crucial step in your skincare routine, just as important as picking the right cleanser.

A toner serves to remove any lingering impurities after cleansing and restores the skin’s pH balance, ensuring the skin is primed for moisturization.

  • For dry skin, choose a toner containing hydrating ingredients like rose water or chamomile, which will help to soothe the skin and retain moisture.
  • If your skin is oily, opt for a toner with astringent properties, like witch hazel or tea tree oil, to control excess oil and minimize the appearance of pores.
  • Sensitive skin will benefit from a toner free from alcohol and fragrances, containing ingredients like aloe vera or cucumber to calm the skin.
  • For those with combination skin, a balancing toner is key, look for ingredients like green tea or niacinamide which can regulate oil production while maintaining skin hydration.

The final step of your skincare routine is moisturizing which helps to lock in hydration, prevent dryness, and maintain the skin’s natural protective barrier.

  • For dry skin, a thick, cream-based moisturizer that contains ingredients such as ceramides and hyaluronic acid is ideal as it helps to lock in moisture.
  • Oily skin types can benefit from oil-free, lightweight gel moisturizers that won’t clog pores, look for those with hyaluronic acid or aloe vera which provide hydration without feeling greasy.
  • Sensitive skin should opt for hypoallergenic, fragrance-free moisturizers that contain soothing ingredients like oatmeal or chamomile.
  • For combination skin, a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer works best, providing hydration without triggering oiliness.

Ultimately, the best toner and moisturizer for your skin are those that balance and address your specific skin concerns without causing irritation or discomfort.

Like your cleanser, the most expensive options are not always the best suited for your skin, it’s about finding the right match for your skin type and needs.

Advanced Skincare Solutions

Advanced SkinCare Solutions

Building on the basic steps of skincare – cleansing, toning, and moisturizing – an advanced skincare routine incorporates additional targeted treatments to cater to your specific skin needs.

Exfoliating

Exfoliation is a key advanced step, which involves the removal of dead skin cells on the skin’s surface, thereby promoting cell turnover and revealing a brighter, smoother skin texture.

All skin types can benefit from exfoliation to some degree, but the frequency and type of exfoliation may vary.

  • Normal and oily skin types can handle exfoliation more frequently, potentially 2-3 times per week. Especially for oily skin, exfoliation can help manage excess sebum and prevent breakouts.
  • Dry skin can also benefit from exfoliation as it can help remove flaky skin patches and allow moisturizers to penetrate more effectively, but should limit this to once a week to avoid over-drying.
  • Similarly, sensitive skin should approach exfoliation cautiously. Opt for gentle exfoliants and limit to once every 1-2 weeks, or less often if any irritation occurs.
  • Combination skin can benefit from targeted exfoliation, focusing on oilier areas while sparing drier ones.

Always remember, over-exfoliation can lead to skin irritation and damage, so it’s essential to find a balance that works for your skin.

Serums

Serums, packed with high concentrations of active ingredients, are another integral part of an advanced routine.

These thin, lightweight liquids penetrate deeper into the skin and can target a range of skin concerns from wrinkles and hyperpigmentation to redness and acne.

The type of serum you choose should be tailored to your individual skin needs.

  • Normal skin types have a wider range of options and can benefit from antioxidant-rich serums like those with Vitamin C or E, which help protect skin from environmental damage while improving radiance.
  • For dry skin, hyaluronic acid or glycerin-based serums are excellent choices as they bind moisture to the skin, enhancing hydration and plumping the skin.
  • Sensitive skin types should look for serums that contain soothing ingredients like aloe vera or chamomile. These ingredients can help calm inflammation and reduce redness. Additionally, serums with peptides or ceramides can reinforce the skin barrier, which is often compromised in sensitive skin.
  • Lastly, for combination skin, consider using different serums for different areas of your face. For example, an oil-regulating serum can be used on the T-zone, while a hydrating serum can be applied on the drier areas. Always remember, it’s crucial to patch test any new product to ensure it’s compatible with your skin.

Eye Cream

Eye cream is a vital addition to your skincare routine, particularly due to the delicate nature of the skin surrounding your eyes. This area is thinner, more sensitive, and often the first to show signs of aging or fatigue. Eye creams are specially formulated to tackle these unique challenges.

They are typically packed with potent ingredients like peptides to promote collagen production, antioxidants to combat premature aging, and hydrating elements like hyaluronic acid to retain moisture.

Regular use of a dedicated eye cream or serum can help reduce the appearance of fine lines, puffiness, and dark circles, contributing to a youthful and refreshed look. It’s not just about aesthetics, but also about nourishing this sensitive area and promoting overall skin health.

Lip Care

Lip balm or cream is another integral component of a comprehensive skincare routine. These products are specifically designed to hydrate and protect the delicate skin of your lips.

Unlike other parts of the body, the skin on our lips does not produce natural oils, making it prone to dryness and chapping.

Lip balms or creams, enriched with moisturizing ingredients like shea butter, vitamin E, or beeswax, help to restore moisture and create a protective barrier against environmental stressors, such as cold weather or dry air. Furthermore, many lip care products also incorporate SPF to shield your lips from harmful UV rays.

Applying a lip balm or cream regularly, especially before heading outdoors or going to bed, can ensure that your lips stay soft, healthy, and well-nourished. It’s not just about achieving a perfect pout, but also about maintaining the overall health of your lips.

Face Masks

Face masks are an important addition to a skincare routine, providing targeted solutions for various skin concerns.

  • For dry skin, look for moisturizing masks with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, which can help to replenish moisture.
  • Those with oily skin may benefit from clay masks, which can absorb excess oil and cleanse pores. If your skin is prone to acne, consider masks with salicylic acid or tea tree oil, known for their blemish-fighting properties.
  • For sensitive skin, soothing ingredients like oatmeal or aloe vera are your best bet.
  • Lastly, if anti-aging is your concern, opt for masks containing ingredients like retinol or vitamin C, which promote collagen production and brighten skin.

Charcoal Masks

Charcoal masks can be particularly beneficial for individuals with oily skin and those prone to acne. The activated charcoal in these masks works like a magnet to attract and absorb dirt and oil from the pores.

It not only helps in deep cleansing but also exfoliates, removing dead skin cells and promoting a clearer and more balanced complexion.

Moreover, it can also help reduce the appearance of pores, making the skin look smoother and more refined. However, as charcoal can be quite drying, those with dry or sensitive skin should use it sparingly and follow up with a moisturizer to prevent skin dehydration.

Clay Masks

Clay masks are a great choice for individuals with oily or combination skin types. The natural absorption properties of clay help to draw out and trap excess oil, reducing shine and preventing the clogging of pores that can lead to acne breakouts.

Clay masks can also gently exfoliate the skin, removing dead skin cells to reveal a smoother, more radiant complexion.

However, they can be drying, so those with dry or sensitive skin should use clay masks sparingly and always follow up with a hydrating moisturizer.

Similarly, those with mature skin may find that clay masks help to tighten and firm up the skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Sheet Masks

Sheet masks are an excellent choice for those with dry skin. These masks are typically soaked in a nourishing serum that deeply hydrates and soothes the skin, helping to restore its natural moisture balance.

Sheet masks usually need to be left on the skin for a longer period, typically 15-20 minutes, allowing the skin ample time to absorb the beneficial ingredients.

Post usage, any leftover serum can be massaged into the skin for additional hydration.

Remember to always follow up with a moisturizer to seal in the hydration.

šŸŽ THIRD GRADE HERE I COME! šŸ‘©šŸ¼ā€šŸ« I st šŸŽ THIRD GRADE HERE I COME! šŸ‘©šŸ¼ā€šŸ«
I still can’t believe I’m typing this…
This fall, I’ll be stepping into the classroom as a third grade teacher at Christian Liberty Academy!

Yes, I’m excited to teach. But what I’m really excited about is sharing what God has done to bring me here—because this story started over 10 years ago.

In 2013, I walked into CLA for a memorial honoring Mike’s brother. I was a brand-new believer, and something about the place just wrecked me in the best way.
I left in tears, whispering, ā€œI want to teach here.ā€

But I was a hairstylist with no plans for school. That dream felt wild and impossible.

Two years later, I applied to Moody Bible Institute. Not only was I accepted, but they took all my beauty school credits. A miracle.

Over the years, God kept weaving CLA into our lives—through friends, connections, and redemption stories I could’ve never planned.

When we enrolled Andy in kindergarten there, that same homecoming feeling returned. But with littles at home, we homeschooled for a few years.

Then last fall, God stirred our hearts again. I submitted my resume in faith… not knowing what job (if any) was available.

Fast forward: CLA called.
I thought it was for Bible class.
Instead… they offered me third grade.

It was more than I could’ve ever dreamed.
The moment I stepped into the classroom, I felt it deep in my bones—this is where I’m meant to be.

Only God could take a rebel-hearted hairstylist with nothing but questions…
and turn her into a teacher with a calling.

From salon chairs to classroom desks—He did it.
He planted me right where my heart first whispered, ā€œI want to be here.ā€

All glory to the One who does immeasurably more than we could ask or imagine.

Motherhood is such a contradiction. It will bring Motherhood is such a contradiction.

It will bring you to your knees in worship and in weariness.

It’s the greatest gift—and the greatest sacrifice.

A holy calling that asks for your whole heart, your whole self, and somehow, gives you even more in return.

Motherhood is late nights and early mornings.

It’s sticky kisses, tearful prayers, and deep, unspoken joys.

It’s the ache of pouring out—and the awe of being loved so fiercely by little hearts who see you as home.

To be a mama is to live in the tension:
of holding on and letting go, of losing yourself and somehow finding more of who God created you to be.

And today, while we honor the beauty and blessing of motherhood, we also hold space for the brokenhearted.

For the women who long for a child.
For those grieving a mama they can’t call today.
For those with strained relationships, losses, or longings.

Today was so bittersweet 😩 Last April I was as Today was so bittersweet 😩

Last April I was asked if I wanted to teach in our homeschool group at Bible study.

My instant answer was a hard no; but I’d pray about it.

I’m so thankful for the Lords discernment, so thankful that His Word is alive and active. I prayed and he answered me.

I was teaching homeschool.

I don’t ever feel qualified to be sharing Gods word. And if you were one of those who rebelled with me in my youth then it shouldn’t be hard to understand why.

And yet, God equipped me every step of the way, igniting a passion and joy within me, allowing me a creative outlet that shined a light on Him, and all the while continuing to grow in grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ.

Tomorrow, I’m doing something I’ve only dreamt of doing for over ten years now; I’m interviewing at Christian Liberty Academy.

My hearts desire has been to teach Bible there since I first stepped foot in the art wing back in 2013.

I can still remember sitting in Mrs. Hessler’s room, hearing stories about Mike’s brother, their class, the community they had. I never felt so at home amongst strangers.

This opportunity is the only thing that can pull me away from community Bible study.

And so. Today, my amazing cbs family not only gifted me with the most beautiful goodbye flowers, but sent me off covered in prayer!

As I anticipate the interview tomorrow, I am so beyond thankful for this community that has poured into me these last seven years!

And for the incomprehensible reminder that God is with is always.

No matter what happens. It’s all for His glory āœŒšŸ¼!
ā€œWhy do you seek the living among the dead?ā€ ( ā€œWhy do you seek the living among the dead?ā€ (Luke 24:5)

On that quiet morning, everything changed. The tomb was empty, hope was alive, and death was defeated.
Today we don’t just remember a moment in history—we celebrate a living Savior who still meets us in our brokenness, walks with us in our waiting, and calls us into resurrection life.

Let your heart rise with the dawn. The stone has been rolled away.
Jesus is alive, and because of that—so is hope.

Happy Resurrection Sunday, friends!

One of our favorite Easter weekend traditions is m One of our favorite Easter weekend traditions is making this Easter Story Snack Mix!

It’s simple, fun, and such a sweet way to focus on why we’re really celebrating. We lay out all the ingredients, and as we go through each one, we read a snippet of Scripture that points us back to the Easter story.

The kids and I both love it—it’s a meaningful (and yummy) way to spark conversation!

I turned the ingredient list and Scripture guide into a printable for my email subscribers. Every day of this Holy Week series, I’ve been sharing meaningful resources to help the week come alive (pun intended)!

Good Friday isn’t comfortable —and it shouldn’t be. But we don’t sit in sorrow
without hope. We sit in the tension of mourning and marveling.

I feel like I’m extra sensitive this year to the weight of this day while also standing in an awe I havnt experienced in years.

Honestly, probably not since I first believed.

I’ve spent the last few weeks, and especially the last six days, prepping and preparing an exclusive Holy Week study series for my email subscribers.

I almost didn’t do it because I don’t have a grand scale of subscribers and I often believe the quantity is the requirement to create content.

Wrestling with and in the waiting this year caused me to really reflect on the question: where does my joy come from?

It genuinely comes from the Lord; being consumed by His Word, sharing Truth, communing in creativity.

I’ve really fallen in love with the more intimate and authentic atmosphere of emails. It sounds strange I know. But the social pressure isn’t there and I feel so much more acclimated to share more vulnerably .

As with most my emails, the Holy Week series started as little notes sporadically written across my phone app. Usually typed within the darkness of my bedroom late at night or in the first rays of sunshine in the all too early morning. There is no in between here.

Those little notes evolved into such a sweet symphony of study. I can’t express the gratitude I have for the almost dozen women walking alongside me this Holy Week. But truly I tell you, I would do this again even if no one joined.

Digging deep into the depths of this week is beyond life giving - it’s giving eternity! It’s the tiniest taste of a greater satisfaction. It’s sitting in the tension of the mourning and marveling.

The weight of today is so devastating. But it’s also where our redemption shines. Love for me and you is what held our savior to that tree. Living this life for Him, in full surrender, is only possible because of that cross.

Thank you Jesus.

šŸŽ THIRD GRADE HERE I COME! šŸ‘©šŸ¼ā€šŸ« I st šŸŽ THIRD GRADE HERE I COME! šŸ‘©šŸ¼ā€šŸ«

You are seen. You are loved. You are not forgotten.

Happy Mother’s Day—to the weary, the wonder-filled, and the waiting.

May you feel the love of a God who sees it all and calls it holy.
