Welcome to the first Tuesday Beauty Tips Series! Today, we’re going to explore The Ultimate Guide to Skincare Routines.
As someone who has struggled with dry skin, I’ve tried my fair share of skincare products. In this post, I’ll be sharing my personal favorites along with some helpful guidelines about skincare routines to assist and encourage you on your own journey to healthy, glowing skin.
Before diving into product recommendations, let me tell you a little bit about why I am the gal pal to deliver this knowledge to you!
License to Skincare

I am uniquely qualified to guide you through your skincare journey because I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist for over 15 years. My vast experience in the beauty industry includes working with some of the top skincare companies. This is where I’ve gained insight into the science behind effective skincare.
Additionally, I hold a high standard for the ingredients used in skincare products. Therefore, I always emphasize thorough research before recommending any product.
This extensive background ensures you’re getting expert advice backed by years of professional experience and diligent scrutiny in skincare selection.
Identifying Skin Types
Before we learn the ultimate guide to skincare, we need to first figure out our skin type. If you do not already know, here is how to tell which skin type you have + how best to take care of it.
Determining your skin type is critical as it forms the basis of your skincare regimen. The most common skin types are dry, oily, combination, and sensitive.
Dry Skin

Dry skin is characterized by a lack of moisture in the skin, which can lead to a rough, flaky, or scaly appearance. You may notice that your skin feels tight, especially after washing. It might also look dull and lackluster, due to a buildup of dead skin cells on the surface.
Dry skin is often sensitive to weather changes, feeling excessively dry in cold or windy conditions. You may also experience occasional red patches.
If these signs are familiar, chances are you have a dry skin type.
Oily Skin

Oily skin type is typically characterized by an excess production of sebum, the skin’s natural oil, which can lead to a shiny or greasy appearance.
Individuals with oily skin often have enlarged pores and may struggle with issues such as blackheads, pimples, or other types of acne.
The skin may feel oily to the touch, especially in the T-zone area (the forehead, nose, and chin). Despite washing your face, you might notice oiliness reappearing within a few hours.
If these symptoms resonate with you, you likely fall into the oily skin category.
Combination Skin

Combination skin is often recognized as having traits of both dry and oily skin types, usually distributed in different regions of your face.
You may observe your skin to be oily in the T-zone area (forehead, nose, and chin) and dry or normal on the cheeks and around the eyes.
This skin type can manifest as shiny skin and enlarged pores in the T-zone with the possibility of blackheads, while areas such as the cheeks feel dry and could even be flaky or rough.
Dealing with this skin type can feel like you’re fighting two battles at once – managing oil production in some areas and replenishing moisture in others. But, with the right care and tailored skincare routine, balance can be achieved. And, the result is healthy, glowing skin.
If these characteristics sound familiar, you probably have combination skin.
Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin is often characterized by a heightened tendency towards inflammation and adverse reactions when exposed to certain triggers.
You might experience feelings of tightness, discomfort, or even burning, especially after using certain skincare products or cosmetics. Redness, itching, and flaking are common indicators, as well as the frequent emergence of rashes or bumps.
If your skin reacts quickly to changes in the weather or environmental factors like wind or sun exposure, or if it takes an unusually long time to calm down after a reaction, you likely have sensitive skin.
Remember, having sensitive skin requires careful selection of skincare products. It’s advisable to patch-test new products before full application and opt for products labeled ‘hypoallergenic’ or ‘for sensitive skin’.
If these symptoms align with your experience, you likely have sensitive skin.
Building a Basic Skincare Routine

Now, let’s understand the basics of a skincare routine.
A basic skincare routine consists of three steps: cleansing, toning, and moisturizing.
Cleansing helps to remove dirt, oil, and makeup from the skin.
Toning helps to balance the skin’s pH levels and prepare it for moisturizer.
Moisturizing helps to hydrate the skin and prevent dryness or reduce excessive oil.
Cleanser
Choosing the right cleanser for your skin type is a vital first step in your skincare routine.
- For those with dry skin, opt for a hydrating cleanser that is free from harsh chemicals which can strip the skin of its natural oils, instead look for ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin that support moisture retention.
- If you have oily skin, a foaming cleanser can help to effectively remove excess oil without causing irritation. Salicylic acid is a beneficial ingredient for this skin type as it helps to unclog pores and control oil production.
- For those with sensitive skin, a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser is ideal to avoid skin irritations.
- Lastly, if you have combination skin, a balanced cleanser that can regulate oil production without over-drying areas of the skin is key.
Remember, the best cleanser for you is not always the most expensive one, but the one that suits your skin type and leaves your skin feeling clean and refreshed.
Toner + Moisturizer
Selecting the right toner and moisturizer for your skin type is the next crucial step in your skincare routine, just as important as picking the right cleanser.
A toner serves to remove any lingering impurities after cleansing and restores the skin’s pH balance, ensuring the skin is primed for moisturization.
- For dry skin, choose a toner containing hydrating ingredients like rose water or chamomile, which will help to soothe the skin and retain moisture.
- If your skin is oily, opt for a toner with astringent properties, like witch hazel or tea tree oil, to control excess oil and minimize the appearance of pores.
- Sensitive skin will benefit from a toner free from alcohol and fragrances, containing ingredients like aloe vera or cucumber to calm the skin.
- For those with combination skin, a balancing toner is key, look for ingredients like green tea or niacinamide which can regulate oil production while maintaining skin hydration.
The final step of your skincare routine is moisturizing which helps to lock in hydration, prevent dryness, and maintain the skin’s natural protective barrier.
- For dry skin, a thick, cream-based moisturizer that contains ingredients such as ceramides and hyaluronic acid is ideal as it helps to lock in moisture.
- Oily skin types can benefit from oil-free, lightweight gel moisturizers that won’t clog pores, look for those with hyaluronic acid or aloe vera which provide hydration without feeling greasy.
- Sensitive skin should opt for hypoallergenic, fragrance-free moisturizers that contain soothing ingredients like oatmeal or chamomile.
- For combination skin, a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer works best, providing hydration without triggering oiliness.
Ultimately, the best toner and moisturizer for your skin are those that balance and address your specific skin concerns without causing irritation or discomfort.
Like your cleanser, the most expensive options are not always the best suited for your skin, it’s about finding the right match for your skin type and needs.
Advanced Skincare Solutions

Building on the basic steps of skincare – cleansing, toning, and moisturizing – an advanced skincare routine incorporates additional targeted treatments to cater to your specific skin needs.
Exfoliating
Exfoliation is a key advanced step, which involves the removal of dead skin cells on the skin’s surface, thereby promoting cell turnover and revealing a brighter, smoother skin texture.
All skin types can benefit from exfoliation to some degree, but the frequency and type of exfoliation may vary.
- Normal and oily skin types can handle exfoliation more frequently, potentially 2-3 times per week. Especially for oily skin, exfoliation can help manage excess sebum and prevent breakouts.
- Dry skin can also benefit from exfoliation as it can help remove flaky skin patches and allow moisturizers to penetrate more effectively, but should limit this to once a week to avoid over-drying.
- Similarly, sensitive skin should approach exfoliation cautiously. Opt for gentle exfoliants and limit to once every 1-2 weeks, or less often if any irritation occurs.
- Combination skin can benefit from targeted exfoliation, focusing on oilier areas while sparing drier ones.
Always remember, over-exfoliation can lead to skin irritation and damage, so it’s essential to find a balance that works for your skin.
Serums
Serums, packed with high concentrations of active ingredients, are another integral part of an advanced routine.
These thin, lightweight liquids penetrate deeper into the skin and can target a range of skin concerns from wrinkles and hyperpigmentation to redness and acne.
The type of serum you choose should be tailored to your individual skin needs.
- Normal skin types have a wider range of options and can benefit from antioxidant-rich serums like those with Vitamin C or E, which help protect skin from environmental damage while improving radiance.
- For dry skin, hyaluronic acid or glycerin-based serums are excellent choices as they bind moisture to the skin, enhancing hydration and plumping the skin.
- Sensitive skin types should look for serums that contain soothing ingredients like aloe vera or chamomile. These ingredients can help calm inflammation and reduce redness. Additionally, serums with peptides or ceramides can reinforce the skin barrier, which is often compromised in sensitive skin.
- Lastly, for combination skin, consider using different serums for different areas of your face. For example, an oil-regulating serum can be used on the T-zone, while a hydrating serum can be applied on the drier areas. Always remember, it’s crucial to patch test any new product to ensure it’s compatible with your skin.
Eye Cream
Eye cream is a vital addition to your skincare routine, particularly due to the delicate nature of the skin surrounding your eyes. This area is thinner, more sensitive, and often the first to show signs of aging or fatigue. Eye creams are specially formulated to tackle these unique challenges.
They are typically packed with potent ingredients like peptides to promote collagen production, antioxidants to combat premature aging, and hydrating elements like hyaluronic acid to retain moisture.
Regular use of a dedicated eye cream or serum can help reduce the appearance of fine lines, puffiness, and dark circles, contributing to a youthful and refreshed look. It’s not just about aesthetics, but also about nourishing this sensitive area and promoting overall skin health.
Lip Care
Lip balm or cream is another integral component of a comprehensive skincare routine. These products are specifically designed to hydrate and protect the delicate skin of your lips.
Unlike other parts of the body, the skin on our lips does not produce natural oils, making it prone to dryness and chapping.
Lip balms or creams, enriched with moisturizing ingredients like shea butter, vitamin E, or beeswax, help to restore moisture and create a protective barrier against environmental stressors, such as cold weather or dry air. Furthermore, many lip care products also incorporate SPF to shield your lips from harmful UV rays.
Applying a lip balm or cream regularly, especially before heading outdoors or going to bed, can ensure that your lips stay soft, healthy, and well-nourished. It’s not just about achieving a perfect pout, but also about maintaining the overall health of your lips.
Face Masks
Face masks are an important addition to a skincare routine, providing targeted solutions for various skin concerns.
- For dry skin, look for moisturizing masks with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, which can help to replenish moisture.
- Those with oily skin may benefit from clay masks, which can absorb excess oil and cleanse pores. If your skin is prone to acne, consider masks with salicylic acid or tea tree oil, known for their blemish-fighting properties.
- For sensitive skin, soothing ingredients like oatmeal or aloe vera are your best bet.
- Lastly, if anti-aging is your concern, opt for masks containing ingredients like retinol or vitamin C, which promote collagen production and brighten skin.
Charcoal Masks
Charcoal masks can be particularly beneficial for individuals with oily skin and those prone to acne. The activated charcoal in these masks works like a magnet to attract and absorb dirt and oil from the pores.
It not only helps in deep cleansing but also exfoliates, removing dead skin cells and promoting a clearer and more balanced complexion.
Moreover, it can also help reduce the appearance of pores, making the skin look smoother and more refined. However, as charcoal can be quite drying, those with dry or sensitive skin should use it sparingly and follow up with a moisturizer to prevent skin dehydration.
Clay Masks
Clay masks are a great choice for individuals with oily or combination skin types. The natural absorption properties of clay help to draw out and trap excess oil, reducing shine and preventing the clogging of pores that can lead to acne breakouts.
Clay masks can also gently exfoliate the skin, removing dead skin cells to reveal a smoother, more radiant complexion.
However, they can be drying, so those with dry or sensitive skin should use clay masks sparingly and always follow up with a hydrating moisturizer.
Similarly, those with mature skin may find that clay masks help to tighten and firm up the skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Sheet Masks
Sheet masks are an excellent choice for those with dry skin. These masks are typically soaked in a nourishing serum that deeply hydrates and soothes the skin, helping to restore its natural moisture balance.
Sheet masks usually need to be left on the skin for a longer period, typically 15-20 minutes, allowing the skin ample time to absorb the beneficial ingredients.
Post usage, any leftover serum can be massaged into the skin for additional hydration.
Remember to always follow up with a moisturizer to seal in the hydration.
