What Does the Bible Say About Love?

Valentine’s Day.

Just looking at the word ignites visions of red roses, chocolate hearts, and/or baby faces with arrows.  The imagery is vibrant and many, but only one word comes to mind.

LOVE.

Maybe you think of love as portrayed in cheesy rom coms or Hallmark Christmas movies (no judgement – I’m human, too).

Or do you think of love as a harrowing adventure?

The word love, as we know it in the English language, can be translated over 100 times.  FUN FACT: Japan did not have a word to translate love until the late nineteenth century.

According to an ad aired by Google Translator in 2019,

ā€œEveryday the most translated words in the world are ā€œHow are You? Thank You and I love You.ā€

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT LOVE: OLD TESTAMENT

Hebrew is no different.  The word translated for love in Hebrew is Ahavah.

One of my all-time favorite Bible resources is the Bible Project.  (I may have to dedicate an entire post as to why I recommend this so strongly, but it will suffice to say that it is full of excellent biblical commentary and visually stunning features and tools!)

ā€œ[Ahavah] sometimes describes physical affection, like the king of Persia’s ā€œloveā€ for Queen Esther but there are other Hebrew words that more specifically refer to physical desire or sex (the words for that are dodim or ā€˜agab). Ahavah is more broad. So Abraham had ahavah for his son Isaac—that’s parental love. Jonathan showed ahavah for his friend David, that would be brotherly love.ā€

Bible Project

Ahavah is the translation for the word love found in the Shema that God’s people prayed everyday, encouraging us that we are to Ahavah God and His people as well.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT LOVE: NEW TESTAMENT

If you open your Bible App, click the little magnifying glass, and type in l-o-v-e, you will receive an overwhelming list of verses that will seem familiar to believers and unbelievers alike, many coming from the New Testament.

ā€œFor God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.ā€

‭‭John‬ ‭3:16‬ ‭ESV‬‬

ā€œbut God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.ā€

‭‭Romans‬ ‭5:8‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Agape Love

This specific love is where the nerd in me comes out.  The translation here for love is different from the ahavah of the OT.  This love that Jesus spoke of first, followed by his disciples, is an action, not a mere feeling.

ā€œBut here’s what’s fascinating. The earliest followers of Jesus who wrote books of the New Testament in Greek, they didn’t learn the meaning of agape by looking it up in ancient dictionaries. Rather, they looked to the teachings of Jesus and the story of his life to redefine their very concept of ā€œlove.ā€ā€™

Bible Project

ā€œTHE FOUR LOVESā€

In his 1960 work, The Four Loves, CS Lewis discovers and analyzes the Greek agape love, and also the three other types of love that can be translated in Greek within the BIble.

I highly recommend this book. You can listen on audible, like I did! Just click here!
  • EROS: romantic love

This translation can be found in the Hebrew translation as agab and is best for describing a romantic love between man and woman. It is a physical love, a passion or doting of another.

Lewis claims the love of Eros can be demonstrated best as Christ being the bridegroom of the Church.

  • PHILIA: friendship bond

Lewis addresses this love as the least demanding.  .

This love is best described as an experience shared with another, a friendship.  But not any generic friendship; instead, philia is the sort of friendship where you have ā€œthat feeling where you can pick up right where you left off.ā€

This is the most common love demonstrated in the Bible, and as Lewis suggests, ā€œour most strictly commanded communion with God.ā€

  • STORGE: empathy bond

This is the most natural translation of love, it is the love expressed through familiarity, family, closeness or ones ā€œbonded by chanceā€ as Lewis describes.  We see this love lived out by Jacob’s love for his sons, Mary and Martha’s love for their brother Lazarus, and even the way parents love their children.

According to Lewis, storge love is the love of God as our Father and we as His daughters.

  • AGAPE: unconditional love of God

This love.  I have Taylor Swift singing in my mind as I write these words. This agape love, it transcends and overtakes any other translation of love.  Lewis recognizes this selfless love as the greatest of the four loves, and sees it as a specifically Christian virtue to achieve.

That’s because this love, agape, is unconditional.  There is no circumstance that could change it.  There is no measure that could dilute it.  This is pure, sacrificial, incomprehensible, lavishing; love.

The word love essentially captures the divinity of Jesus; In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word is God (John 1:1). It is because God loves (agape) so much that He sent His son to be the sacrifice needed to reconcile us Holy.

WILL YOU BE MY VALENTINE?

It’s apparent, from even the slightest study, that love is a prominent characteristic of God.  As John declared, we love because He first loved us (1 John 4:19).

So, this Valentine’s Day, whether you are getting lavished with chocolates and flowers, or feeling the sting of the absence of affection, take heart my sister.

The thing that defines love is not material.  In fact, you cant see it at all.  But just as you can sense the heat of the sun without it shining on your face, so is it with God.  You may or may not sense His presence, but you can be confident, because of His agape, if you have been saved by Grace through faith in Jesus Christ, you are loved beyond measure.

And if you haven’t accepted Jesus as your Lord and savior (you might not even know what that means yet), trust me when I tell you, He is in pursuit of your heart, asking you to ā€œBe Mine.ā€

THE POWER OF LOVE

Love is a very powerful word.  Endless images and feelings can be produced just by those four simple letters.

Consider Pauls letter to the Corinthians.  Love is so much more than a feeling or a statement.  Love is an action that was crafted by the creator of the universe for me and you.

ā€œLove is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.ā€

‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭13:4-7, 13‬ ‭ESV‬‬

The Best Prayer Prompt to Help You Pray More Intentionally

The Best Prayer Prompt

To help you pray more intentionally this season

It’s one week until Christmas and I definitely don’t feel like I’m in the Christmas Spirit.

If I’m honest (which is not hard for me to be), my heart feels far from one of adoration and joy. And the worst part is there’s no reason for it.  Unfortunately, some days (even weeks at times) my mental health is just harder than others; I’m easily distracted, easily irritated, finding it hard to be grateful. Anyone feel me?

In these moments, it’s really hard for me to authentically pray. I let the Devil deceive me into believing that I have to feel close to God in order for Him to hear me. And, well, that’s a lie.

The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? Jeremiah 17:9

Maybe you’re reading this and thinking, ā€œsister, I am with you.ā€  Or maybe you are walking hand in hand in a season of closeness and calm. Even if you’re reading this never having prayed before, I’m sure the thought of how to even begin seems overwhelming.

None of these things mean we don’t pray. In contrast, we are to pray, always!

šŸ™ Anxious? Pray (Philippians 4:6)

šŸ™ Convicted? Pray (James 5:16)

šŸ™ Longing? Pray (John 15:7)

šŸ™ Defeated? Pray (Romans 8:26)

šŸ™ Thankful? Pray (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

šŸ™  Happy? Pray (Romans 12:12)

šŸ™ Saturday? PRAY (1 Thessalonians 5:17)

That is why I love prayer prompts. Ever heard of them?  Chances are if you grew up in the church, you’ve heard of these and maybe do this already.

But, if you’re a new or newer believer (I’ve been saved by grace for over a decade and just heard of these a couple years ago!), then I hope these help you to focus on Jesus and armor up in our daily battles.

DON’T MISS THIS

ā€œTherefore take up the whole armor of God… praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.ā€ ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭6:13-18 ‭ESV‬‬

Yes, praying is a weapon in our arsenal against the enemy. I don’t know about you, but I think that’s powerful.

While I don’t necessarily think prayer should always be so stiff, I also think that using this prompt helps me to better freely open up while I pray, and allow the Spirit to lead me.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Prayer is PERSONAL.  I don’t believe there is a wrong way to pray. If you are saved by grace too, then the Lord knows your heart (Romans 8:26).

P.R.A.Y

So here is my favorite prayer prompt to help you focus on, or be more intentional while/when you pray.

P is for PRAISE (Hebrews 13:15)
“Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name.”

Start your prayer by praising our savior. It is scientifically proven that gratitude can change everything. When we start our prayers with praise, we are intentionally shifting our thoughts to all the good we have and all the things we’re thankful for.

R is for REPENT (Isaiah 1:27)
“Zion shall be redeemed by justice, and those in her who repent, by righteousness.”

Isaiah assures us that we are redeemed through the blood of Jesus. He forgives us – completely and totally, no questions asked, not ebcause of anything we have done, but because of HIS righteousness that we are clothed in as new creations in Christ.  Think about apologizing to a friend and receiving their forgiveness; that’s how relationships grow. Or if you’re a parent, how grateful are you when your child admits when they’re wrong and sincerely apologizes? How we communicate with our Heavenly Father is no different.

A is for ASK (John 15:7)
If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

It is written clear as day in Gods word that we can ask for anything in prayer, if we ABIDE in Christ. The world likes to call this ā€œthe law of attraction.ā€ But really, it’s people genuinely asking God (who they mistake for the ā€œuniverseā€, but that’s a whole other post) for the desires of their heart.  Remember, just because someone doesn’t believe in God, doesn’t mean He’s not actively pursuing them (John 3:16-17). Also remember Gods timing is not the same as our own. The scripture doesn’t say you’ll receive it right away. But when we abide in the Lord, our will and desires will ultimately line up with His will, and for His glory .

Y is for YIELD (Proverbs 18:20)
From the fruit of a man’s mouth his stomach is satisfied; he is satisfied by the yield of his lips.

Finally, close your prayer by giving it all up to the one who upholds it all in His hands. Everything we have is His.  Every breath is a gift. Every trial refines us. Every detail of every thing we see, think, feel, touch – it’s all God. So whatever it is you’re holding onto that’s hindering you in this moment, shake it off and into His mighty and capable hand.

Hold down to save to your phone or Pin it for later.

Just because I don’t feel like I’m in the Christmas Spirit, doesn’t mean I can’t experience the Christmas Spirit.

As we think about the little baby in a manger, fully God and fully man, I hope this prayer prompt helps us to grow closer to our Emmanuel, God with us (2 Timothy 1:9).

I have a Christmas gift for you! Yes, YOU! Head over to the FREEBIES tab in the menu and get my secret code to download a special edition Christmas Aesthetic Prayer Prompt to save to your phone! (I keep mine on my Lock Screen and my babies on my Home Screen 😘!)

Growing in the New & Now

Growing in the New & Now

A Mini Biography on a Journey to Jesus & Motherhood

Springtime is the epitome of regeneration.

Trees are budding with new leaves. Flowers begin to bloom. The birds serenade us with their sweet melodies. As the chill and bleakness of winter end, new beginnings are all around.

It is never an easy decision to re-brand a blog. After all, over four years of memories, accomplishments, adversity, and adventure were there. Truthfully, all I wanted to do was change the aesthetics (hello type 4!). However, being as unsophisticated and un-tech-savvy as I am, I ended up creating a whole new site (yes, that was actually easier).

The clean slate and prospect of new ideals won over the nostalgia of attempting to take the time to salvage the old and familiar.

Anyway. Here we are.

The empty section was literally calling out to me to “write your first post.” I felt excited and scared and ill equipped all over again. I felt that same sense of doubt that I did over four years ago; a brand new mama, lonely and lost, and just looking for a space to share my thoughts and build a community to encourage and empower others feeling the same way.

<- How it all began. Two misfits who fell in love and never gave up. It’s so easy to see God’s hand at work in our lives now, but in the new and unknown, there were moments we felt so alone. It wasn’t until Andy was born that Mike and I really started the (sometimes painful) process of surrendering our all to God.

Now, this new season finds me as a mom of three earth bound babies and one in heaven. I am a wife of ever growing wisdom and strength. And forever and always a daughter of the Most High King. These promises are my foundation. They are innately who I am. But that’s not where my story ends.

In fact, as I ponder over my journey within motherhood, I can subtly see the curves of creation. There are these little threads that overlap and unwind, and ultimately led to this moment. Every experience and choice and action has brought me to this second right here. I feel like an endangered animal caught in a rare, quiet pocket of night that is only lit by the ghoulish glow of the screen.

But as He so often does, God took what I had thought were my plans to teach the Bible, and instead called me to live it out for my kids to see and to share what it truly means that He is Emmanuel – God with us! Because if motherhood has taught me anything, it’s that there is beauty in the surrender, that we are made perfect in our weakness. The same weakness I thought would make me the worst mom.

How it’s going ->

We have learned that marriage and parenting really are such an incredible blessing bestowed on us, and something we need to fight for daily.

For so long I have been searching for my calling, my vision, my purpose. I thought that it was always to teach or do hair. It wasn’t until I started being put out of my comfort zone as a mompreneur that I started becoming more aware of who I am and what makes me, well, me.

It should be noted, I did NOT grow up with the dream of becoming a mom. On the contrary, if you had met me even ten years ago I would have spit my tequila in your face if you dared to prophesy me as a hockey mom.

Undoubtedly, I didn’t believe I was meant to be a mom. I had thought that all my past flaws and failures defined who I was and what I was capable of. I didn’t think I deserved to be a mom. That was reserved for mentally stable and thriving individuals and I was one who tended to live in structured chaos. Who knew that was the Lord preparing me. Not I, friend.

It wasn’t until I started studying the Bible that I really started to sense my heart change. I always believed there was more out there (anyone remember that Stacie Orrico Song – the video is below so you can watch and feel old like me or discover one of my fave one hit wonders), but never knew what more there was or what it even was – if anything.

https://vimeo.com/487744123
If you have never heard this before. You’re welcome.

However, from the first chapters of Genesis I was captivated. For the first time I felt seen. I felt whole. And I also felt the weight of all my past choices trying to suffocate me. I won’t lie, once I made the choice to except Jesus as my Lord and savior, to truly believe He is who He says He is, I was finally able to fight to breathe. I was finally aware of the spiritual warfare that was raging before me because I had lived a life without the power of Christ.

Suddenly starved for more truth, shocked at why more people did not know these realities, I applied to Moody Bible Institute. Here I majored in Biblical Studies and truly immersed myself in the wonder and mystery of the Word. It did not disappoint.

Learning about the context, the history, the locations, the people, the culture, the meanings behind these Hebrew and Greek words – it was enchanting. And it made my mission clear – share these truths with others. Jesus himself called us to this great commission.

"And Jesus came and said to them, ā€œAll authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.ā€ Matthew 28:18-20 ESV

This story is just beginning, this journey is just starting to grow. And I would be so humbled if you would join me here, to find encouragement through the stories, studies, and social media I will be sharing every week!

I am so blessed 🄹.

And not in a ā€œmy life is perfect, nothing is wrong, look at me I’m blessedā€ kind of way.

But in a ā€œlife is messy, I am a mess, and yet my rebel heart is constantly being lavished with love and encouragement through my God and His peopleā€ kind of way.

This whole summer has been one giant trust fall. I’m learning what it really means to surrender my expectations—to make my plans but ultimately let the Lord lead the way.

If you knew me before the age of 24, then reading these words probably feels nothing short of crazy 🤪. But friends—the goodness of God is real. It’s available to everyone if you’ll just believe, receive, and continue to follow Jesus.

Has this journey been easy? Absolutely not. But it has been filled with growth, faithfulness, and answered prayers beyond what I could have ever asked for or imagined.

So yes—I’m thrilled to keep sharing my classroom’s transformation, because it represents so much more than dĆ©cor or bulletin boards. It’s a living picture of what the Lord can do when we simply trust Him.

✨P.S. I can hardly believe it, but my classroom wish list is almost completely fulfilled! 🄹 Just a few items remain, and I know the Lord will provide in His timing. If you feel led to help, it would mean the world to me and my students. šŸ’›

Prayer doesn’t have to be complicated. Some days Prayer doesn’t have to be complicated.

Some days my prayers are long, other days they’re just a whispered ā€œhelp.ā€ But one of my favorite tools for staying rooted in conversation with God is the P.R.A.Y. framework:

P — Praise
Begin by worshiping God for who He is.
šŸ’¬ ā€œLord, You are faithful, good, and full of mercy.ā€

R — Repent
Confess where you’ve fallen short, and rest in His grace.
šŸ’¬ ā€œForgive me for rushing ahead of You and for my impatience.ā€

A — Ask
Bring your needs (and the needs of others) to Him.
šŸ’¬ ā€œGive me wisdom for the decisions ahead and peace in my waiting.ā€

Y — Yield
Surrender your plans to Him and listen for His leading.
šŸ’¬ ā€œI release my agenda. Align my heart with Yours.ā€

You can use P.R.A.Y. in the morning, in a journal, while doing dishes, or before bed—it’s less about the ā€œhowā€ and more about the ā€œWho.ā€

Too loud. Too emotional. Too honest.

But ya know what—I’m not trying to shrink myself to fit in.

I’m here for the ones who’ve felt the same.

The anxious mamas, the overthinkers, the rebels learning grace.

The women who love Jesus but still carry questions—and a whole lot of fire.

I don’t write perfect words.
But I pray they point to a perfect God.

Lately, I’ve watched people unsubscribe from my emails—some I’ve known for years.

I still can’t believe I’m typing this…
This fall, I’ll be stepping into the classroom as a third grade teacher at Christian Liberty Academy!

Yes, I’m excited to teach. But what I’m really excited about is sharing what God has done to bring me here—because this story started over 10 years ago.

In 2013, I walked into CLA for a memorial honoring Mike’s brother. I was a brand-new believer, and something about the place just wrecked me in the best way.
I left in tears, whispering, ā€œI want to teach here.ā€

But I was a hairstylist with no plans for school. That dream felt wild and impossible.

Two years later, I applied to Moody Bible Institute. Not only was I accepted, but they took all my beauty school credits. A miracle.

Over the years, God kept weaving CLA into our lives—through friends, connections, and redemption stories I could’ve never planned.

When we enrolled Andy in kindergarten there, that same homecoming feeling returned. But with littles at home, we homeschooled for a few years.

Then last fall, God stirred our hearts again. I submitted my resume in faith… not knowing what job (if any) was available.

Fast forward: CLA called.
I thought it was for Bible class.
Instead… they offered me third grade.

It was more than I could’ve ever dreamed.
The moment I stepped into the classroom, I felt it deep in my bones—this is where I’m meant to be.

Only God could take a rebel-hearted hairstylist with nothing but questions…
and turn her into a teacher with a calling.

From salon chairs to classroom desks—He did it.
He planted me right where my heart first whispered, ā€œI want to be here.ā€

All glory to the One who does immeasurably more than we could ask or imagine.

Motherhood is such a contradiction. It will bring Motherhood is such a contradiction.

It will bring you to your knees in worship and in weariness.

It’s the greatest gift—and the greatest sacrifice.

A holy calling that asks for your whole heart, your whole self, and somehow, gives you even more in return.

Motherhood is late nights and early mornings.

It’s sticky kisses, tearful prayers, and deep, unspoken joys.

It’s the ache of pouring out—and the awe of being loved so fiercely by little hearts who see you as home.

To be a mama is to live in the tension:
of holding on and letting go, of losing yourself and somehow finding more of who God created you to be.

And today, while we honor the beauty and blessing of motherhood, we also hold space for the brokenhearted.

For the women who long for a child.
For those grieving a mama they can’t call today.
For those with strained relationships, losses, or longings.

You are seen. You are loved. You are not forgotten.

Happy Mother’s Day—to the weary, the wonder-filled, and the waiting.

May you feel the love of a God who sees it all and calls it holy.

I need you - especially if you are teaching elementary ed (EVEN BETTER if it’s third grade šŸ˜†)!

I have been nose deep in so many things the last couple weeks as I really prep for Fall! I would love to know a couple things if you’re willing to share;

1. Must have teacher supplies
2. Favorite ways to set up your room
3. Any and all resources for literally everything.
4. Things to add to an amazon wishlist
5. Best books - ļæ¼or ideas for how to create a perfect mini classroom library

I would be so grateful for any and all suggestions, recommendations, and encouragement!
I’ve been told I’m too much. Too loud. Too emotio I’ve been told I’m too much.

It stings.

Not because I need a big list, but because I want my words to matter.

And maybe you get that too.

So I keep writing.

Not for applause, or metrics, or even to be understood—

but because I know I’m called to.

So if you’ve ever felt like a contradiction—too much and not enough—
I think you’ll feel at home here.

This space is for the misfits, the tender-hearted, the faith-filled + still figuring-it-out.

You’re not alone.

✨ I send weekly reflections by email—real, honest, anchored.

šŸŽ THIRD GRADE HERE I COME! šŸ‘©šŸ¼ā€šŸ« I still can’t beli šŸŽ THIRD GRADE HERE I COME! šŸ‘©šŸ¼ā€šŸ«
